There has been considerable debate among enthusiasts as to whether or not BMW is living up to its "Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan. A lot has changed since the 2002 was introduced in the late 60s, but BMW is looking to stoke the flames of physics enthusiasts, beginning with the importation of the 1-series to the U.S.

A recent article in Automotive News contends that BMW is well aware of its waning performance image, especially in the realm of compact vehicles. The 3-series can hardly be considered an entry-level ride anymore, and the upcoming 1-series may be able to fill the niche that its big brother has abandoned.

Rich Brekus, the G.M. of product planning and strategy for BMW's N.A. operations, is quoted as saying that the 1-series, "is the purest BMW we have." He goes on to point out that BMW's driving dynamics are what won people over in the past, and it would be a shame to let the next generation down.

The 1-series will supposedly go on sale in the States next year, with both a two-door and a convertible being offered. We're getting anxious and it sounds like we have good reason.

as saying that the 1-series, "is the purest BMW we have." - excellent

Can't wait to see whether there will be a "M" version of the 1 series. Or maybe a 135i.........Now, that would be nice for a reasonable price.

I really like the sound of that. Auto, when are you taking delivery of yours?

Production in August, in about one month I should be able to get a correct date for delivery.

Mine is July production. I should know in a few days the exact production date.

I found out something really interesting from my dealer...all BMW cars before they start their production process they have a small transmitter that has all the standard and extra equipment stored. When the car approaches the robot...it transmits the correct information so the correct components can be installed on the car with no mistakes.

Pretty cool...right?

With due respects to the author of the last post, I do not really understand what is in a name, what does it really matter what they call what, the old or original M1 is long past and probably only remarkable at that time. Perhaps then an alternative name 1M, baby M, The One M it matters not, even if they were to make the leading performance 1er in the future a diesel:usa7uh::eusa_pray, why would it matter? It is surely the the car and its dynamics that are the important thing not the name.
