BMW UKL Platform Could Underpin a Dozen Forthcoming Models

When the Bavarian carmaker told the automotive media that front-wheel drive is the way to go for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, many fans of the breed were skeptical about this move. However, a recent report tells that even the next-gen 1 Series as well as the X1 and up to 10 MINI nameplates will be underpinned by the new UKL platform.

At the present moment, the modular architecture UKL1 platform forms the skeleton of the all-new MINI (F56), BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (F45) and MINI five-door model (F55), but the future will see extensive use of the UKL platform, with the UKL2 variant expected to underpin the third-generation BMW 1 Series and its sister model, the future BMW X1. Although rear-wheel drive will remain the centrepiece of the German brand, any model under 4.5 meters in length and smaller than a 3 Series will make use of the UKL modular architecture platform.

BMW corporate and government affairs spokesperson Kai Lichte has told the Aussies over at CarAdvice that"We can count on total Group sales, up to 2020, of up to 40 per cent coming out of small and compact car segment, UKL... for BMW, the rear-wheel drive will stay most important by far.” While that is a reassuring bit of news that confirms BMW will not water down its high-end models that would lose their charm in front-wheel drive guise, all isn't set in stone according to Stefan Karch, the 2 Series Active Tourer launch manager. Speaking to CarAdvice at a recent event, Stefan told that "not everything that is possible we can do. If each derivative makes sense profitably. We won't do everything."

So what kind of front-wheel drive madness can we expect from the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG in the years to come? It can handle three and four-cylinder transverse mounted powerplants, so the UKL will most probably underpin future models such as a seven seater variant of the Active Tourer, the next-gen BMW 1 Series and X1 with either FWD or AWD, as well as the coupe-ish sibling of the future X1, that'll bear the X2 moniker.

Although the platform can handle cars as small as 3.8 meters in length, “Mini will always be Mini. If we think about having BMW in that segment it would be completely different car,” commented Karch. That basically leaves the rumor mill open with the possibility of a small Bimmer that'll most probably wear the 0 Series nameplate. The official also dropped a pretty curious hint about what lies ahead for the 3 Series: "It’s really hard to imagine having a 3 Series on a front-wheel drive platform. We don’t see it for the next 10 years that’s for sure. Performance will still be related to rear-wheel drive.”

They don't see a FWD 3-Series for the next 10 years... I don't want to see one for the next 1000 years...
It's scary but it's inevitable that at some point BMW will be either FWD or wheel-less drive. Let's see what comes first.

BMW spokesman confirms Z4 successor with a six-cylinder engine

Could be launched in 2017
After countless rumors, BMW Corporate and Governmental Affairs spokesman Kai Lichte has confirmed the jointly-developed BMW Toyota sports car will spawn a new BMW roadster.

Speaking with Motoring, Lichte said "The first car you will see on this platform of the sports car will be a classic six-cylinder BMW." The spokesman declined to confirm rumors of a hybrid variant but said "First of all, we will have the six-cylinder engine that's for sure. Everything else will be – might be – later."

Lichte also touched on the need of jointly-developing the model with Toyota by saying the "Z4 roadster segment is declining" so the company decided a joint architecture was the best way to increase profitability and ensure the model's survival.

Little else is known about the car itself but the website is reporting it will use a new turbocharged 3.0-liter petrol engine that will debut in the 2016 7-Series. Nothing is official but it is expected to produce approximately 340 PS (250 kW) and 440 Nm (324 lb-ft) of torque.

We just reached out to Lichte to confirm this, but knowing him, NO WAY he said that. Plus nothing in the article points to this.

Out of context reporting.

Soon enough they will divulge their strategy for the joint BMW-Toyota collaboration on which car(s) will be conceived.
What we are getting now from the media is out of context and hearsay.

BMW's future lineup comes into focus, 35up platform to underpin next 3, 5, 6 & 7-Series

Company is working on a variety of new models
BMW's future lineup is coming to focus asAutomotive News has compiled an extensive list of what we can expect.

Things will kick later this year when BMW introduces the facelifted 3-Series sedan. Our spies have already snapped photos of the model and it appears to have a new front bumper and a revised grille. Nothing is official but the model could receive upgraded four- and six-cylinder engines as well as a revised nomenclature.

The 3-Series Touring is expected to receive a similar facelift in 2015 but it appears the 3-Series GT won't get a refreshed appearance for at least two or three years. Regardless, the 4-Series Coupe, Convertible and GranCoupe are slated to go under the knife in 2016.

Bigger changes are expected next year as the company will unveil the new 7-Series at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The model is expected to ride on the new "35up" platform that features aluminum, carbon fiber and high-strength steel. The sedan could also have carbon fiber body panels and styling inspired by the Vision Future Luxury Concept. A variety of engine will be available and BMW is reportedly considering an M variant to battle the S63 and S65 AMG.

2015 is also expected to usher in the new X1 which will ride on the front-wheel drive UKL platform. Previous spy photos have shown the model will have an evolutionary design and engine options could include:

  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 184 PS (135 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 231 PS (170 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 150 PS (110 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 184 PS (135 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque
Speaking of the UKL platform, it is expected to underpin the new 1-Series sedan in 2017. The model will become the company's first front-wheel drive sedan and is set to battle the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA.

Later that year, BMW could launch a new i5. Nothing is official but previous reports have indicated it will be an eco-friendly four-door model with seating for up to five people.

Revised ZF 8-Speed Automatic will debut in BMW 520d

Since 2009, the eight-speed automatic ZF transmission ensured that BMW customers experienced the smoothest and lowest fuel consumption transmission on the market.

Now a facelift of the award winning gearbox will come to market and it will be available in the 2014 BMW 520d which, since July, is using the new B47 engine.

The new BMW 520d 2014 and its B47 190-hp version has an average fuel consumption of 4.1 to 5.0 liters per 100 kilometers – depending on gear, tires and body styles. The most efficient choice is the new BMW 520d Sedan with the revised ZF eight-speed automatic, which consumes 0.4 liters less than before and has a CO2 emission of 109 grams per kilometer.

e42b2e9ff242ae8afa27536263a41b06.webp

A significant contribution to reduced fuel consumption makes the new ZF 8HP. Due to lower drag torque, higher spread and improved rotational vibration damping, the eight-speed automatic offers both better performance and lower fuel consumption. In addition to the version used in the 520d (8HP50 up to 500 Newton meters of torque), there is another variant designed for more power: 8HP750.

Significant share of lower consumption has increased from 7.0 to 7.8 spread, because this ensures each gear has an average of 50 revolutions per minute less.

Dr. Jürgen Greiner (Head of Development passenger car transmission of ZF Friedrichshafen AG) says BMW is the first premium manufacturer to take advantage of the second generation 8-speed automatic transmission.

Some of you may remember me from the crazy bmw.com-sourced pre-prod info dump in early 2013. I found another source. It's very limited this time: just the model, engine, and transmission type, and lists not only the models that are guaranteed to come, but also all those that BMW considered as a possibility (for example, the list includes both RWD and xDrive, manual and auto US F31s). The list is exhaustive as of:

February 2014
(if a rumored vehicle is not on the list, it probably didn't exist as a finished engineering project at that time).

This post is updated every few months, with fresh info added and the officially announced vehicles removed.

FAQ:
Can you tell me when these models are coming out?
- Yes, see latest update.

Can you tell me which of these models will come to market, and which ones we'll never see?
- No.

What options will be available on these cars?
- No clue.

Can you tell me where you found this info?
- No.

This is just the US market, EU is simply too varied to type in all combinations.

This is based on December information.

BMW is going to significantly expand their plug-in hybrid offerings, utilizing something that looks like a completely new powertrain. The following cars are listed now:

3/9/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

The following list provides better future visibility, but should be taken with a grain of salt: its reliability hasn't been tested. I believe it's best to consider this as "BMW's best laid plans". Also, no transmission information is available. Again, this is US only data. PM if you need EU data. Confirmed or disproven info is marked accordingly.

EU/UK: 11/15 through 10/18
US: 3/16 through 10/18

Change of plans in regard to US 320i: it is possible the LCI will continue with N20.

--------------------------------------
5/24/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

I'm seeing more evidence that US 320i will not get the new B48 engine at LCI. So, F30 re-engine for the U.S. looks as follows:

320i - never
328i - MY2017
335i - MY2016

Independence Day Special!

All re-engined F3x models will get new designations:

4-cyl B48 engine will have 330i/430i designation instead of 328i/428i
6-cyl B58 engine will have 340i/440i designation instead of 335i/435i.
PHEV F30 will come as 330e, not 328e.

I hope to have more detail on this development later.

--------------------------------------
7/4/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

They just keep on comin':

Same designation changes I first announced for the F3x will apply to F2x, so we're going to get 230i and M240i.
B48 engine for the 430i models appears to have been pushed back to from March to July 2016 SOP.
US G11/12 will have one diesel model, 735d (B57D30O0 engine, to be sold as 730d in ROW - shouldn't be a surprise really). Top of the range will be the 760i, using N74B66U1, an updated version of the engine currently found in RR Ghost and Wraith.

And, finally:

M4 GTS!

(Please don't ask questions - the fact that it exists is all I know.)

--------------------------------------
9/3/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

There'll be a FWD 1-series, including U.S. models. Model code F52, will belong to the same family as F45 2AT and F48 X1. U.S. will get 120i and 125i (the latter with available xDrive). This is all I know for now. Please don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger.

F47 X2 will come to the U.S. as 25i with sdrive and xdrive.

The complete family of BMW FWD vehicles at the moment looks as follows:
- F45 hatchback
- F46 MPV (not for the U.S.)
- F47 X2
- F48 X1
- F49 X1 LWB (China only?)
- F52 1 series something or other

A few things to expect in the G11/G12 7 series:
- LED lights standard with laser optional
- B&W audio
- Advanced parking assist
- Most optional wheel styles will be bi-color (I'm guessing similar to i cars?)
- Next gen drive assist
- Wifi hotspot

WOW. Took a while to get through all of that. I have got to start making more money.

M

Yes it makes interesting toilet reading for sure! LOL

BMW i8 Concept Spyder

X7 won't be based on new 7-Series
A BMW source cited by InAutoNews says there won't be an i8 Spyder or extra derivatives of the next generation 7-Series.

At the 2012 Beijing Motor Show we saw BMW'si8 Concept Spyder but don't hold your breath for a production version as it seems it won't happen, despite a rumor from last December indicating the model has been green-lighted for a late 2015 launch.

In addition, the same BMW source announced the next generation 7-Series will continue to be offered only in standard and long wheelbase versions, without adding coupe and convertible derivatives like Mercedes-Benz is doing with the latest S-Class.

Lastly, the BMW representative said the already confirmed BMW X7 will not be based on the next 7-Series as originally believed. The seven-seat SUV is expected to come out in 2017 or 2018 and will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

As I expected. It should be the same as with the GL. Enlarged X5 that's it.
Hopefully they'll stick with the promise for a V12 SUV.
