From a tax perspective, an increase of 1000 cc in displacement will be rather harsh for end users in many countries. We are returning back to pre-2010 era (E60 525d vibes anyone?). The 520d should have remained a 2.0-liter alternative. Even though the B57 is a wonderful engine (as was M57, for example), I don’t think that 3-liter only diesel choices will look splendid from a sales perspective. Ok, I get that the margins will be higher for BMW, but the reasoning becomes very clear: make the diesels look rather unapealling for customers. Essentially, they are sacrificing the low-end diesel variant and going fully on electric choices for the 5 Series. Even the low-end, petrol-fed models are at risk.
