Hot! BMW AG: What's Next

Personally, I'd be absolutely delighted to see a successor to the 8er GC that would incorporate many of the exterior design elements seen on this rendering.

Envisioning a derivative of this metal surfacing on a sleek 4 door GT produces an exciting image.

Rumors from some sources indicate exactly that, that around 2029/30 we will see a successor to the 8 GC with the new wave of design in the form of an EV, we will see what happens

I see the M8 as a GT car, more than a sports car. It's fast as f#ck, but that doesn't make it a sports car.
It's somewhere between the current AMG GT63 and the old S63 Coupe imo.

Sorry, I think you missed my point. The XM is a lower resource spin off car. The drivetrain they were pretty much making anyway, on a platform that already exists under a very similar car in their line-up. If you want a dedicated platform pure-bred sports car it would require quite a lot more effort than they made with the XM.

Right I see. Fair enough

A regular AMG GT and M8 Comp are almost equally fast on the Nurburgring. So per that I suppose you don't consider the AMG GT a sportscar either?
BMW designed the M8 Competition to hold its own on track, even though most owners won’t use it that way.

S63 coupe? LMAO I am not even able to find a Ring time for that boat. Now THAT is a true GT.

The C192? No I don't. Its a sporty grand tourer. A good sporty grand tourer, but its not really a proper sports car. Too heavy.
The C190 was indeed a proper sports car.

Aye, I think that's what AMG did with the C192 GT. They made a rapid car that could hold its own on a track IF needed.

2100kg 2 door. Beautiful as sin. Yeah, that was a proper grand tourer.

Maybe we need a new term for the C192 and M8. A Sports Tourer?

The S63/65 was more in line with a Bentley Continental GT in terms of overall package. I can’t think of any other model that was similar to it. Maybe the DB11, but that one looked more exotic and sports car-ish than the S63.
M8 truly felt like a 2-door sports car rather than a full-on GT, it lacked the luxurious feel, and focused more on performance.
The direct competitor for the M8 would be the AMG GT, but then again, the AMG GT looks far sportier.
Let’s say the M8 was its own thing.

Yes, the C190 AMG GT S did 7:35. The M8 CP did 7:32
Which then makes the M8 coupe a proper sports car too. In fact, every non SUV M is a proper sports car. The M850i is a GT (with M engine)
Every car doing the Ring in around 7:30 or quicker is a sports car in my book.

Maybe we need a new term for the C192 and M8. A Sports Tourer?

I can potentially live with that.

And it’s a proper 4 seater.

Hardly. A grown Dutch adult male will not fit behind a grown Dutch adult male.
A Rolls Royce Spectre however? That's a real 4 seat coupe. The only one I think. And a GT (with range anxiety)

The GT-R started to show what’s possible.

Yeah and the M8 never bothered to show what's possible, but alas. We'll end up in a discussion about the BMW top end not selling and all that if we go that route. The last hoorays were these shooting brake thingies and not a track focussed lightweight tool.

Unfortunately it’s very cramped in the back.

Yeah I think ever a 4er coupe has more space.
8er was more about style.

Yeah the GT S has about 100 less horsepower and is RWD.
I'm sure a Miata/MX+5 is a lot slower than the M8 around the 'ring too, but it's still more of a sports car.

The GT63 4 door and Panamera Turbo S are faster than both. Are they sports cars?

If we're gonna have this debate then I guess we'd need to iron out what the definition of a sports car is.

Ultimately it doesn't matter I guess. It'd be nice if BMW made a RWD drop top 2 seater is all I'm saying. Chop the lid off an M2 if you have to. Make it happen.

Agreed, a new 760i is more of a sports-car than a Lotus Elan because it goes around the ring quicker.
