Hot! BMW AG: What's Next

Latest news, trending discussions, reviews, and major updates
I have a NA 4L flat 6 with ITB and 9000 rpm and 500 HP. And a car with electric motors. The electric motor is more responsive and linear. Just saying.
I'm sure it is.

But driving around a regular street car with 1200+ horsepower is just excessive. Its getting to a point where I'm actively hoping governments start adding surcharges or extra taxes for cars with over 600hp, because what are people doing with that power?

A 9000rpm 500hp ICE engine would have a lot of character, and would be more than fast enough. Heck the current M3/4 CS are already blisteringly quick. Absurdly fast. Too fast for the road even with just 525hp.
If e-motors are better, then great. Make an e-motor with 500hp. That's enough.

A tax on horsepower isn't logical, reasonable or justifiable - most people are rarely deploying maximum horsepower anyway (if they're driving legally) - and as with any tax based system, it means its fine for rich people, even if they're utter pricks behind the wheel.

However, and I've said this for decades - licenses should be graduated in steps by performance. Most people would be fine on a <170hp <2t (or less) license, the more powerful you get, the more tests you have to take.

There's no issue with people having powerful cars, until they start driving them like absolute nobs with no consideration to their surroundings or other road users. We have categories on our licenses based on number of axles and loading, seems daft that you can step out of a FWD base Corsa and into a 1000hp+ car with little more than 12 hours experience driving at all (on <70mph dual carriageway or less, roads during the day), just as it's daft I could have driven a rigid lorry towing a trailer after only ever driving a 3 door Corsa B.

My EV only has 600 HP (650 if you press boost which I almost never do) , but I don't use even that. Just cause a car has 1200 HP doesn't mean you have to use it. And with EVs you don't even suffer inefficiencies or drivability the way you would with a bigger ICE engine. Manufacturers make it cause HP sells.

If the 5N has made me realize something, it is that nothing is stopping EV from being programmed to show the same characterstics as an ICE. It is like a 4K display, nothing is stopping it from showing a grainy black and white picture if that is what you are into. Question is, is that really what you want all the time?

But there are ~500HP EVs too. And 400 and 300 and 200 ones too. You make it sound like there are only 1000 HP EVs.

I can get behind that.

Indeed, there are a great many motorists who lack the cognitive, intellectual and emotional criteria required in order to operate a high powered vehicle. The "car poser" scene here in Germany is a prime example of this. Visiting our urban club and red light districts present a case-in-point showcase. As well as quite specific communities of motorists who are young, own (or "borrow" from affluent parents) very expensive, very powerful vehicles and drive them devoid of the slightest sense of responsibility and otherwise appear as mature as, at best, elementary school children.

I agree(y)

The Porsche GT3/GT4 RS engine is exactly how a modern N/A BMW M4 engine should be, apart from being a straight 6 instead of a flat 6.

I don’t care about the fake noise, fake shifts and so on of the Ioniq 5N, which will be copied by all sporty manufacturers BTW ( AMG already disclosed it, and BMW M will do the same ).

They still leave me cold, they’ve no character and no personality at all.

The more time I spend in different electric cars, the more I start to  ICE powered cars.

I compare it sometimes to a smartwatch, and a mechanical watch, eventually you wear both, one for you health, one for your pleasure.

More limited run cars model. They are no brainer. Consumers are filling to pay a big premium for ICE-only and manual cars. It's a no-brainer if they can sell a single car for the same price 3-10 regular ones.

If you think it is the fake shifts or noise that makes 5N good, you have most probably not driven one.

Not yet, but it’s on my agenda.

Together with the G580EQ it’s the EV, I look forward the most to drive it, especially because of these gimmicks and the suspension.

From what I was told, it’s the suspension that is really special on this car.

Why would you look forward most to drive it, when you already said it "still leave me cold, they’ve no character and no personality at all". Though now you say you have not driven one.

Just stop with the bull shitting already. It is obvious you had an account here, before got banned and rolled another, which is fine, but at least have the f#cking balls to admit it, instead of pretending to be "Swiss Bob".

Apologies for the misunderstanding.

I test drove several other electric cars
(Zoe, q4 e-tron 50,e-tron 55, EQC400,EQE500,Tesla X Dual Motor, Tesla Y to be precise)
,which left me cold.

That’s why I want to drive this one, to see If it can convince me.

Best Regards
Swissbob

P.S. I never had a account here before. The Owner of the MB Passion Blog knows me since 2015, in german car communities I am well known.

The G580 EV is a fantastic drive. Its commercial failure is just further evidence that the market is still baulking at high end EVs.

BMW Group shows positive sales development in second quarter of 2025

+++ Second-quarter deliveries increase +++ BMW Group delivers 1,207,388 units in first half of 2025 +++ Significant sales growth of +18.5% for BMW Group electrified vehicles in YTD June +++ Full availability of all models: MINI posts strong sales increase, with growth across all regions +++ BMW brand: Clear segment leader in first half-year +++ BMW M GmbH delivers over 100,000 vehicles in half-year period for the first time.

The geography split shows how global the brand is. Germany, the home market, is not the biggest. What sells well in Germany might not appeal as much in the USA or Asia. No wonder product lineups keep growing.

That's why these car companies are doing what they're doing.
The lack of mega displacement motors for global brands is partially because of China's displacement tax, which effectively puts a cap on how big they can make ICE displacements.

Glad to see BMW investing more into its Rosslyn Plant in South Africa which is celebrating over 50 years of producing 1.7mill cars.
