You really have to define 'near future'. They'll be around for the next 10 years, after that most likely not anymore. And I think 10 years is pushing it.

Within the next 5-7 years.
I am curious if BMW is at all devoting resources that would in the past be devoted to a new petrol V8 engine, or are they just going to continually update the current V8 architecture for upcoming decade. I can see BMW working on a new inline-family (3,4,6) and top out at 6 cylinders for quite some time. There will be demand for a V12 for Rolls-Royce. But do they see demand for a V8 in BMWs to warrant a new gen V8?

It depends on BMWs mentality. If they are forward thinking they won’t develop an entirely new V8 but replace the current one with mild hybrids or PHEV powered by a 6 cylinder and electric motors.

... And where's the additional new vehicles we can put money down on!? How on earth do they expect to pay for all this... ?!?
Also, I don't take this news seriously because it's delivered on a slide, without whooping and hollering, it's a bloody disgrace!
... besides that, with no space program or mass transit system in the pipeline I think we can see that BMW aren't really taking this car manufacturing thing seriously.. 100 years old and they're only making 2 billion a year profit...
Pffft.. just because they can manufacture any one of about 30 different cars, in about 17 million different configurations once every 15 seconds they think they can go around wearing wearing SUITS to investor conferences!!! Amateurs...
... I mean... have they got NO idea how to 'do' electro-mobility!!

26 New Or Updated BMW M Cars Reportedly Due By Late 2020
The new M3 will be at the heart of the overhaul program.
We’ve already heard about some of BMW M’s future plans – the sports division won’t build a front-wheel-drive car and will switch entirely to conventional torque converter automatics in the next six to seven years. But now, thanks to a new report from Autocar, we have more details on the company’s roadmap, as it is preparing for the most ambitious revision program in its history.
In total, BMW M wants to launch no less than 26 all-new or revised models by the end of 2020. The high performance lineup will be joined by 11 true M cars and 15 “warm” M-Performance versions of existing models. The Bavarian manufacturer will pursue annual sales of more than 100,000 units globally.
The next generation M3, together with the mechanically identical M4 Coupe and Cabriolet, will have a central role in the overhaul program. Initial details suggest we will see the new M3 at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show with sales starting a couple of months later, but this is not confirmed at the moment.
“Along with the M5, the M3 is a crucial car for BMW M,” Frank van Meel, BMW M director, told the British publication. “It wasn’t the first fully fledged M car but it continues to stand for everything the brand is based upon.”
Also very important for the growth of the division will be the full-blown M versions of the third generation X3 and the second generation X4, as well as the upcoming 8 Series. The M8 has already been confirmed for debut sometime next year.
Below the hardcore M models will sit mid-range M Performance vehicles, including more powerful versions of the X2, new 3 Series, and the future X7 SUV. The German automaker also plans similar variants for the still unconfirmed 4 Series GT, and the next generation 4 Series Coupee and Cabriolet, as well as the third 1 Series.

BMW Working Hard To Make Future Electric Cars Sound Better
A dozen of pure EVs will be out by 2025.
It’s a known fact that lots of automakers have been criticized in recent years for installing digital sound enhancers in their cars powered by combustion engines. BMW has done it quite a few times, such as with the previous-generation M5 (F10) launched towards the end of 2011. Since then, the Active Sound Design technology has been expanded to a multitude of other cars, including models such as the M3 and M4 duo, the M2, the smaller M140i, and even the eco-friendly i3 and i8 models. The X5 M and X6 M have it, too.
What Active Sound Design does is amplify the engine’s sound through the cabin’s speakers to boost the aural experience, so they say. Future electrified BMWs will also come bundled with artificial sounds not only to make the cars more appealing in terms of how they sound, but also because of legal requirements about EVs having to make noises to alert those around the car about its presence.
In the United States for example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announceda little over a year ago a law that will come into effect beginning September 1, 2019 when hybrids and electric cars (with a gross vehicle weight rating of up to 10,000 pounds) will have to have this type of alert system. This way, the NHTSA estimates 2,400 pedestrian injuries will be prevented each year.
Getting back to BMW, the firm’s man in charge of powertrain concepts, Andres Wilde, revealed recently in an interview that work is well underway at a new system tailored to EVs:
““We are working on that… [actually] in the laboratory last week. It’s hard to describe, I cannot sing it. It’s not so easy to keep this sound from a six- or eight-cylinder.”
He went on to specify BMW is studying this matter very carefully and will have something to show in the near future, something that will be able to deliver an “emotional experience.” Such a system will be put to good use in quite a few models considering the company has promised to roll out 25 electrified cars (not counting mild hybrids) by 2025, with 12 of them being pure EVs. Some notable models include the MINI EV due in 2019, followed a year later by the electric X3 (could be called iX3), and in 2021 by the iNext flagship set to also boast a highly advanced autonomous driving system.

It seems to me the future cars of the 5th generation are covered with brighter and darker wrappers.
The iNext and the X3 BEV are bright wrapped.
Do you think it could mean the bright wrapped cars in this road map are pure electric cars and the darker wrapped cars are plug-in hybrids or is it without relevance?

There will be no M2 CSL.
Also, there will be an M5 hybrid. Now, who would've thought that would happen.
Edit: When I say there will be no M2 CSL, what I mean is that whatever team was working on the M2 CSL has been officially asked to do something else. This was also announced at an internal event.
The official wording was on the lines of "We will be stopping work on the M2 CSL". These words were spoken by a very "Frank" person.

The entire list is pretty large. I am only posting a subset which have M2 CS logo in them.

I believe it has already begun. On the other end of the internet spectrum at least!!
Anyway, the prototypes seen around for the M2 is for the spiced up CS model, right? There hasn't been a CSL model seen yet as far as I'm aware of, but I could be wrong.

I knew of the M2 C(ompetition)S.
But everyone was running around and reporting of an M2 GTS and then materialised into the CSL,which the CSL was the one being discussed.
Good to see we are now getting some solid information regarding the M550e now.

Wrap colors do not mean a thing. Take a second look. The cars in the upper section are all pure electric. There are exactly 12 of them. The cars in the lower section are the plug ins.
