BMW 1-Series US pricing to be under $30,000

When the BMW 1-Series arrives in the U.S. in spring of 2008, pricing is expected to be under $30,000 for the 128i. The range-topper 135i will be priced in the mid-30k range.
“You will have the high quality you are used to in the 3 and 5 series,” Falko Rodomski, 1 series product manager told Automotive News. “This is not a small, cheap BMW. It is a small premium car,” said Rodomski.
U.S. will be getting only one variant of the 1-Series, a rear-wheel-drive coupe that shares some parts with the BMW 3-Series. Unfortunately, U.S. will not be getting the hatchback version of the 1-Series.
The 128i is powered by a 3.0 liter 6-cylinder engine producing 230 horsepower with 200 lb-ft of torque. The 135i has a 3.0 liter 6-clyinder twin-turbo engine that produces 300 horsepower with 300 lb-ft of torque. That gives the 135i the ability to do 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds with a top speed of 155mph, or so BMW says.
According to a BMW spokesman, about 96,000 people have signed up for information about the car at its website.

No no no. The base price will be juuusssstttt under $30k. Enough to get fence-sitters to hook onto the idea that they could budget a 128i. However, such a car will be so completely decontented that nobody would want it and no dealer would stock it.

So, you add leather, sport package, metallic paint and maybe HID lights and we're easily talking about a 128i that stickers for more like $33,500. Same goes for the 135i - You won't get out the door on that car for any less than about $39,000.

I think BMW is doing the right thing with 1er pricing in the US. The fruit hangs low enough to rope in brand aspirationals, but the content for dollar is sparse enough to keep the car firmly planted in the realm of legitimate status vehicle.

I think that there will be plenty of dealers that will be in stock with base 128i. First of all, say hello to the new loaners that they provide. Second of all, when I had my internship at BMW SA, most of the cars that were going to the States were bone stock apart from leather (which could have been leatherette actually... I can't really tell the difference ) and automatic transmission.

Also, I think the base 1er will seriously lower the age group for BMW, which is a good or bad thing depending on the way you look at it.

Impossible at the current US Dollar : Euro exchange rate. BMW already losing hundreds of Euro millions per year due too weak US Dollar.

Also mind that BMW also need some space for possible (perhaps in 2nd Mk) 1er sedan, or even hatch to enter US market ... sometimes. Therefore coupe should be positioned as high as possible.

I forgot about the sedan. That in addition to convertible will give BMW a whole new "Series" of cars. Going to be a exciting times in the BMW press room when it comes time to crunch sales numbers.

Please, no 1-series sedan. Leave that to 3-series. Don't know about rest of world but in US majority of 3-series owners rarely use the rear seats. If they get sedan, its only because once in a while they will take their freinds/peers out.

No need to schlep down to the BMW dealer just to be turned away for a new 1-Series brochure. We've already seen the European version. Now, 1Addicts.com again breaks the brochure news, with the first scans of the US version 128i and 135i glossy pamphlet. C'mon: Weight of the 135i is 3,332 lbs -- 239 lbs less than the 335i coupe -- and they're listing the zero-to-60 time as 5.1 seconds (compared to the 335i's 5.3 seconds)? Shenanigans! [NOTE: C&D's test yielded 4.8 seconds].

Dealer here says that people have been steadily putting down deposits, with the majority of them going for the 135i. I think this is going to be a huge hit for BMW.
