I like the rear end in the new pictures - more dynamic than in the initial pic. I wish they would put out some photos of the car in the grey that you find in the spy shots. As for people complaining about it being a small coupe, I am glad that it is small. The E30 wasn't any bigger. The problem is not that the 1er is a small coupe - you are just accustomed to seeing bloated cars and anything that breaks with the trend your eyes are used to, has to be an ugly duckling.

1 for the road




Summer's here - sort of - and it's coupe-season in Bavaria.
No sooner had BMW put the finishing touches to the soon-to-be-unleashed M3 than the boys in Bangle's design department turned their attention to transforming their little 1-Series into something a bit sleeker.
So this is the 1-Series Coupe. And it looks, well, exactly as we imagined it to be. We've never quite been convinced by the 1's mix of slabby sides and odd angles, but had hoped the coupe might sense of it all. But no.
Styling aside, though, things get more interesting. As in three-hundred horsepower interesting. Although the 1-Series Coupe will be launched with the option of two diesel engines - the 120d and 123d - it's the 135i that we're getting excited about.
With a twin-turbo version of BMW's three-litre straight-six, the 135i puts out 306bhp and 295lb ft of torque from a lowly 1,300rpm.
Which means plenty of shove, a 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. In other words, the 135i will be seriously quick.
It should be able to handle the pace, too. The driven rear wheels are bolted to a five-link suspension set-up, and you even spec your 135i in M-Sport trim for a firmer ride. But take heed, drift monkeys - there's no diff.
All good then? Very nearly. The only black mark against the 1-Series Coupe is that BMW has officially rubbished any suggestion of an M version.
Apparently it doesn't make financial sense: a M1 would cost close to 40 grand - too much for such a small car.
We say forget financial sense, BMW. We like the idea of the 135i but reckon there's a real opportunity for a lightweight special to rival the iconic E30 M3 - and make the M1 the best-handling car in history.

M-inspired Performance for the 135i Coupe

The standard M Sports Package for the 135i Coupe offers more performance and a striking look. This sounds all so good!! With all of this "M" trim and equipment, what more will the M1 (if it comes) offer other than a more powerful engine? M-differential lock? DSG type of transmission? Do tell Eni......

That being said, you could say the exact same thing about what EnI said. You cannot assume that everyone who dislikes this design is immediately: blind; tasteless; stupid because they cannot comprehend the design or a BMW hater.

Just read a market report for the E30 M3 today, and now we have yet another back to basics BMW for a new generation to look forward to! Can't wait to see it, hopefully we'll get an NA debut @ L.A.

but the reason to why ive said it twice thus far is.. no 1.. the first time i saw the pics.. i thought it was ugly..but i was urged to wait for offical pics..
i did that..and it was still ugly..so i needed to vent my opinion..

and now one last time..
given these latest shots.. its still ugly from the rear.. short and stubby from the side.. boring im from the front..
the interior is surprisingly good looking though..i like the way its designed..and it seems to be rather high quality for a low end modell..

so thats it..now you wont hear me say that its ugly again..
unless someone asks my opinion

Got Damn! Thank god I said, I'd reserve my judgement for this car until IRL or official pics. Now looking at the curves in the boot and how that whole design scheme has played out....I like it!

I can't say that i don't like it but i also can't say that i like it.

Compared to E92 (which is the most beautiful BMW of the recent years IMO) , this coupe looks average at best.

Stateside, this car will still be too expensive to become neo-ricer material. However, I can imagine that there will be a fair amount of juiced 128's shoing up on the streets. I expect many a tacky custom job, but not an outright Integra-magnitude frenzy that damages BMW's image.

I was just talking to one of our best brains about this car and the question came up: What is BMW's take on this car in the US? What do they want it to be? Is this a performance-oriented BMW that dispense with the bloat and frivolities in favor of delivering a pure driving experience? Or is this an entry-level vehicle for aspirationals, who couldn't quite hack getting into a 328i?
