the 5 series has really outsold the E, even though the e class has a much larger range....the a1 looks to be a slow seller in its first full year of sales....

With the model changeover from E90 to F30 the 3er sales will hit new highs this year, nevertheless it's still impressive. The Opel Astra surprised me.

Here's the 2011 Top-30 for the US market: Top 30 Best-Selling Vehicles In America - 2011 Year End - GOOD CAR BAD CAR

The most eye-opening difference is the lack of Asian brands/models in the European list. Superiority complex... or completely justified?

The biggest markets in Europe are in countries that have their own car industry. Many people simply want to support the domestic manufacturers, and in turn the manufacturers listen to the needs of their home market.
If you look at the top 100 of Finland (a country that has no car industry to speak of) and where heavy taxation means that reliability is appreciated more than in countries where new cars are more affordable, you'll see that there are many models from Asian markes among the best-sellers...

Also, it has to be said that the Asian manufacturers have been quite slow in responding to changes in the market: It took them forever to come up with competitive diesel engines, and they're also been quite slow in introducing downsized turbocharged engines that are the current big thing in Europe.

The figures from your own country will have more interest to you but the overall European figures show how each model performance against it's competitors.

+1 on the A1, A3, A4, 3 series and A6 as these are all either about to be released as new/facelift models or are in their first year as such.

Thanks for the figures and insight MikeJ. Having migrated to America a few years back it's been very interesting learning about the automotive industry/market here...and now I'm just trying to understand the European buyer market. I understand the will to support locally manufactured vehicles and brands, but the absence of global top-sellers such as Corolla, Camry, Accord, Civic seems a little strange (I'm guessing they may go by different names). Fascinating to compare.

:)

The Camry was a slow seller in Europe. Being a relatively large non-premium sedan, it was really not the right kind of vehicle for Europe - as many other manufacturers will attest. It was discontinued in EU markets several years ago. The European-designed Avensis has taken its place as the biggest Toyota sedan (and in some markets, the only Toyota sedan).

A few years ago Toyota replaced the hatchback version of the Corolla with the Auris:
attachment.php?attachmentid=11256&d=1331833306.webp

In most European markets, buyers prefer hatchbacks to sedans, and as a result of this the Corolla sedan is only available in the more 'traditional' markets where a sedan body is preferred.

The European versions of the Accord and the Civic are available in all European markets, but they seem to have fallen off the radar of the average buyer.
