Movies Best Commercials and Movie Trailers of 2011 Super Bowl

I agree, most ads weren't all that engaging. The vast majority of ads were so hell-bent on being comical, only a handful of ads actually stood-out.

As Shining Star stated, the Chrysler ad about Detroit was rather captivating and engaging...just not sure why they didn't use the new 300C instead of the 200, because the 300C is befitting of such a well-constructed advertisement.

The Mercedes 'family' ad was classic Mercedes...focusing on heritage and progress.

I didn't watch every single minute of the broadcast, but how many different ads did BMW present? Of course the 'American made' X3 ad, and I also saw the 'Ch-Ch-Change' 3er diesel ad...was there any others?

Also, did Toyota throw in an ad? I don't recall it....and it would be a glaring omission since all the other key car brands had something to show.

BTW... damn that Kia Optima looked good! Woo-wee.. should be Ki-yeah!

Yea, I don't know why all of them are hell bent on being comical, it is almost stupid - like the ad agencies have a funny pre canned idea and then just plug whatever product in. Like the Bridgestone "reply all" ad, wtf does it have to do with tires?

Man that commercial was funny and anyone who has been in that situation knows what the guy is going through.

Most of the time the commercials really focus on the extreme and making you laugh. Sometimes it really doesn't fit the product itself, but it's memorable and that is what they want to accomplish.

I agree. I guess we were the small portion of sober viewers. The ad agencies must know that the vast majority of viewers are noticeably intoxicated, and therefore would find these comical ads very humorous.

....but... then HoH stated this:

The problem with that is... the ads are memorable for only a short period of time, as viewers drink more..and more.......and more.......aaannnddd more.....and therefore end up not being able to recall the ads.

:D

Even though I despise stupid ads which have next to nothing to do with the product (beer companies!), I can understand that the 'wtf was that?' effect on viewers can make the ad stand-out and somehow end up in the back of ours minds....BUT... when every single ad...one after the other is being comical and stupid, the ads are not standing-out of having that 'wtf' effect, but rather they're all drowning each other out, thereby making the honest & message-focused ad a rare and memorable gem.

pardon my ignorance as Im not too clued up with American culture, but isn't super bowl some kind of sport (like rugby)? If so, what does it have to do with so many movie trailers and car commercials?

In short.. it's the biggest one-day sporting event in the world, and therefore with such a large number of tv viewers, the advertisements featured during the game are BIG MONEY, and a great deal of hype always surrounds the ads.

Yes, it is NFL (National Football League) championship game held every year. It is also the most watched TV event in the US, making it a big attraction for advertisers. I think the TV viewer ship was an estimated 111 million this year. And the going rate for 30 sec ad spot was $3million this year. So usually companies bust out their latest and greatest ad campaigns during Superbowl making the ads themselves a big attraction.
