I just happened to spot a black BMW XM on my lunch break in the wild.
The owners must have been seated in the outdoor eating area so i happened to take this photo before I passed it, up close in the metal.
To each his own but to me, it looks like a Frankenstein project on 4-wheels, like a clown vehicle with artificial details. It also is smaller in the metal than the photos suggest. On looks alone, I would give this a pass and definitely would not call it exotic.

People will get it to be different to the usual G-wagen owners.
But they should have made as a G-wagon competitor, rather than an M-homonculous.

^lOl, I wouldn`t take it that far.

I was thinking the same thing actually. BMW does not have a dedicated off-road production luxury vehicle.
It would have been far more interesting if they had brought something like this to the table instead of the XM.
It would have sparked huge interest and profits no doubt.

It would have been better received if it wasn't marketed as the "ultimate M car", because it just isn't.

It seems that some here would be happier with this and so in red, which would have been the easy way out for BMW, thank goodness it's not about conforming people who think they know

BMW does not have a dedicated off-road production luxury vehicle.
It doesn't have it and taking into account the success of the G-class especially in the last 10+ years, they have had plenty of time to think about it, like when the X5 or the first X6.
It's hard for me to visualize an Off-Road BMW, but I agree that it would be a wise bet that I would love to see.

1- Maybe under Alpina would be the perfect brand to do it?
The name was made to measure

2- Why is there no G class Maybach?
They have done it with any model that does not deserve it
Surely it's because they can't make more and they always "sold out"
Its price of $343,000, which I saw one a few days ago, does not allow more.

In short, the XM is a thing and a niche that had to be explored.
That of an off-road is another and it can be a success of profits and I hope it arrives some day

This thread reminded me of the upcoming facelift of the Cullinan. I am excited and the front really needs an update.

Any news?

It would have been better received if it wasn't marketed as the "ultimate M car", because it just isn't.

Where was it marketed as the ultimate M car?

The name
Its the XM, not the X.

Having the M there means its writing sporting cheques that it can't cash with that M badge. Heck the X5M and X6M are vastly superior M cars than the XM.

If they had just called it the BMW X with a greater focus on the luxury aspects of its design and interior (and not made it so horrifyingly ugly) it probably would have been better received.

The G wagen is liked because it is a G wagen. Its an SUV with tremendous offroading capability. Its not pretending to be a Maybach, and its not trying to be a sports car. Even the G63 doesn't try to be a sports car. That's where I think BMW went wrong.

This car is nowhere marketed as the ultimate M, you're reaching with subjective conclusions.
But I am not here to defend the turd, so feel free to make the situation look worse than it is.

And the G wagon (like the Defender) exist because of their acclaimed history. If BMW were to do a true off-road car, they would be better of to create something like Toyota does, imho. I'd love to see it.. Something capable for when the world ends and roads crumble.

I mean, something like a Toyota Land Cruiser, G Class or Defender would not be a luxury after a bit of rain in LA, LOL:

On the plus side for the XM.... I guess it stays where it's parked no matter what landslide comes its way.

Did you have a chance to try all three?
Comment in a little more detail about your experiences with them, please.

By whom? GCF?
I haven't driven all three. Have you? Would you be able to conclusively say that the XM handles better than the X5M? I'm just referring to what people who have driven all three have concluded.

The XM has a wonderful interior and looks horrifying from the outside. But the looks you can get over it you accept it as an ostentatious display of wealth. However, as has been said by multiple reviews it's ride is nowhere near as comfortable as it should be, and it's handling is nowhere near as sharp as...you guessed it... The X5M, let alone a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT.

So what is it? Its neither the best luxury SUV, nor is it the best performance SUV, nor is it the best Off-road SUV. So it's just a vanity object?

I'm sure that's great for some buyers, but that doesn't mean I'll say it's a good product.

XM has the most comfortable backseat out of any BMW I've been in. I have zero experience with it, but I am convinced it must a a terrific continent cruiser.

No, none, but I'm not the one making conclusions, right?

Nobody asked you for that.

I think you get carried away by a couple of rejections by youtubers, as much as I do by many others who were delighted with the car, but you don't see me saying anywhere that it is like an M4 CSL, insuring things means being sure

The highlight of the brand’s model offensive in its anniversary year, the BMW XM is also the first BMW M original since the BMW M1.

The back seat in that car is suuuuuuuper luxurious and welcoming. It surprised me because the M branding and brutal front end do not shout luxury.
