The one thing that stands out in this test is how similar these saloons are. This isn’t surprising considering the makers benchmark test them against each other – but does that mean none of them stands out from the crowd.

Volvo’s S80 is excellent value and well laid out inside, but the driving experience falls short and the engine is comparatively unrefined. As a result, it finishes last behind the stylish Audi A6 by the smallest of margins.

A refined powerplant, comfortable cabin and smooth ride mean the Mercedes E220 CDI is the best model here on the road. But two factors caused it to finish second – it’s expensive to buy and costly to run. So once again, the BMW 5-Series clings on to victory by the skin of its teeth.

When BMW, MB and Audi models are being tested, the outcome is different all the time.

Now it's the 5er, in the next test it is the A6, and after that it will be the E

The facelifted E class has improved much on the weak points of the pre-fl model, namely handling, gearboxes and quality. It's time BMW and Audi make their moves also (FL 5 series and A6).

The S80 was pretty disappointing when I took a look last week - I didn't like the leather in the seats which was mixed with rough & smooth textures. Also, it looked smaller and has less presence than the previous S80. It was no match for the E-Class, A6 or 5 Series.

I haven't seen the S80 IRL yet but from the pictures i can say that i like it.

There are full leather seats too and I actually find Volvo's front seats to be very comfortable.

All the Swedes like the Volvo :D

I don't like it at all. But at least it's better than the previous model.

No, Its the only Volvo model I like. Also Saab has only one model I like. The new S80 such a huge improvement over old S80 which I really hated.

I'm the biggest volvo hater here in Sweden and I always enjoy annoying Volvo africandos. The only thing I like about the new S80 is the interior, which I actually appeals to be more then the interiors of ze Germanz.

A lot of positive E-Class reviews lately. Even if it finished second because of price and running costs, the editors seemed to like the new qualities. Good news. :usa7uh:

I really like the S80, it's got a great exterior, a great interior but from this test and AutoCar the vehiche's actual driving dynamics are less impressive. From all of these vehicles, the E220 would be my personal choice.
