3 Series AutoExpress compares a modern day BMW 320d with the historic M3 E30

The BMW 3 series is a line of compact executive cars manufactured by the German automaker BMW since May 1975. BMW's best selling model, it is the successor to the 02 series. Since 2013, the coupé and convertible models have been marketed as the 4 Series. The M version of the 3 series, the M3, debuted with the E30 M3 in 1986.

Directly quoting the presenter of the above video, the Mercedes-Benz 450SEL, the Audi Quattro Coupe 20V, Vauxhall Astra GTE 16V, the Datsun 240Z, the Ford Fiesta XR2, the mkII VW Golf GTi and the BMW E30 M3 are all hero cars of their time. They were fairly quick back then, but the question is, how do they fare against a modern day machinery? In the M3's case, its opponent is a 2013 320d, with a 2.0l turbodiesel engine producing 184 hp and 380 Nm and a fuel economy of 64 mpg. The 1989 M3 of the test has a 2.3l engine with 215 hp and 230 Nm, returning 31 mpg.

The performance difference is measured with a drag race. Not to spill the beans, but the 320d had a great start, with the M3 catching and passing it very soon. The actual difference at the end of the race was in the order of 0.1 seconds for the first 100 km/h and 0.3 seconds for the quarter mile. Check the video above to see for yourselves.
