Phaeton Autocar Road Test: VW Phaeton V6 TDI

Wonderful looking car!

Bit OT: I read once that a delimited Phaeton W12 did 290 km/h easily on an arabic highway. And that was not the topspeed... :D

The driver would be the #1 Porsche/VW hater :)

Jeremy Clarkson got to drive an unrestricted W12 in Dubai at the press launch, and he reached a top speed of 200mph! Customer cars are restricted to the voluntary 155mph maximum adopted by most German car manufacturers (with Porsche being the only company that doesn't stick to that limit).

I find this car to be equally bland/boring/no way telling that it's supposed to be "Premium", and stately/premium-in-a-very-understated/sophisticated-sense all at the same time, very odd. It's almost as if it's VW's far less gaudy version of a Maybach (although not comparable of course) in some weird way as well.

I've heard that the car is kind of VW Groups muscle-flexing to show what they can do with a Luxury Sedan for a bargain price, due to the Companies whom they have a Key to. I.e, it's somewhat a Bentley in sheeps clothing.

I've said it many time before, but man, this would be a great Beater to have. :D

I still like this car, but it appears very dated now. I too toyed with the idea of buying a used one, but man I'm glad I didn't. VW service is horrible, and would probably be doubly so on a car they no longer sell in the U.S. Still though its built like a tank and I imagine drives great, especially in winter with all that weight and awd.

Autocar's verdict confirm that the Pheaton is the iPod Classic of luxury barges: Great value, outdated and somewhat no-thrills. Depreciation slides like that would send me to hospital with a heart attack if I was an owner. However, corporations most likely top the list of owners very much like the Lexus LS which struggles to attract private buyers.
