1M Autocar Road Test: BMW 1M

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé (often referred to as the "1M") is the high-performance model of the E82 coupe range, sold under the BMW M performance sub-brand. While BMW naming convention would have called the car the "M1", an alternate name was chosen to avoid confusion with the BMW M1 supercar from the 1970's. Official website: BMW M

Great scans, thanks!

They should compare it to the the Cayman S instead of the normal Cayman. Pretty unfair IMO.

IMO, they shouldn't compare it to anything that doesn't have 4 usable seats as I wouldn't even entertain them as an alternative. But then again that wouldn't leave much then would it?
If I didn't need the back seats it would be a very tough call between 1M and Cayman S (not R, not DD enough) but I would take the Cayman S.
As it is I need 4 usable seats, so BSM 1M fits the bill perfectly. It's awesome.

There are a lot of people who don't need four useable seats. Does that mean they shouldn't consider a 1M Coupe?

My two options for my next car were the F10 M5 and the R8 V10. Why should everyone have to fit in a neat little box.

The Cayman and the 1M are clearly competitors.

^OK. True.
From my perspective and unique circumstances they shouldn't compare the two. I was cross-shopping, used E92 M3, used TT-RS and RS3.
For everybody else, they should.
:)

1M been tested against Cayman R all the time which I find unfair. Cayman S is more on the same level as 1M than the R version.

On basis of price, the regular Cayman is much closer to the 1M. It's 858 GBP cheaper rather than being 7500 pounds more expensive.
As for comparing the 1M against any Cayman, I suppose that's what a Z4 should be for.

^But why should HP be the sole criteria? Why not weight? power to weight ratio? price? body type? engine type? exclusivity? One is not any more valid than the other and in the end they all figure to varying degrees depending on the individual's preference.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
