Comparison tests AutoBild Sportscars - Peugeot RCZ R vs Porsche Cayman PDK

Peugeot has done an excellent job! I always prefer a Porsche to a Peugeot but that doesn't prevent me from admiring RCZ.
It's the same story with Megane RS. These two French cars are among the fastest FWD ones in the market today. (and also Leon Cupra)

I think nobody would choose the Pug over the Porsche, but anyways kudos to Peugeot for making a competitive car after soooo many years in the wild. I applaud PSA for keep fighting against the bankrupcy and releasing lots of new and improved cars. Compare that to the likes of Fiat, with the ancient Puntos, Bravos, Lancias and the mediocres Alfas.

BTW, for the record, I wouldn't choose either 208, 308 or RCZ. Don't want a Peugeot. But from those three, the RCZ is the best driving by a mile, I just wish Peugeot made their hot hatches drive like the RCZ R. That's what I was trying to say...

Let's wait for the 308 GTi or R, or whatever they call it, as this car is using the new EMP2 lightweight platforn, as the boggo 308 is having very good reviews.

Question - how reliable are a Peugeot these days? in the past they were horrible, like any french car.

They've been improving steadily. I don't think they're not any worse nor better than the average euro mainstream manufacturer: VAG, Ford, Renault, Fiat.......

And there is an error in the second part of your appreciation, Andreas friend. Both Peugeot and Renault used to make VERY reliable cars until the late 90's and all 2000's, when they went junk wise. But they have been improving inmensely.

Amen! It would be a major disaster when they would cease to exist. I like Peugeot, always have. Not feeling Citroën, though. Don't like the DS line either..

You can't look at the RCZ and compare it with the Cayman no matter how great it is because no one would pick it over the Porsche if they had the money because speed and lap times and such a tiny part of the ownership process.

The RCZ is a great little coupe but it's still a Peugeot and that means it needs to be compared with its peers which means would you have it over a Megane RS or Leon Cupra or Golf R?

P.S.
RCZ what a stupid name, sounds like I'm talking about a kids remote controlled car. lol

Another win for the Peg. EVO magazine

I just realized how short the RCZ R's gear ratios are:
  1. 54 km/h / 6800 rpm
  2. 93 km/h / 6800 rpm
  3. 133 km/h / 6800 rpm
  4. 173 km/h / 6800 rpm
  5. 216 km/h / 6800 rpm
  6. 250 km/h / 6630 rpm (limited)

@Just_me the Mini is severely underpowered compared to the others. Needs a bump of at least 50 hp, but more like 60 or 70 considering it's weight..(ok there is more room inside).

On that topic, I find the new Mini Cooper S to be severely underpowered too. It's even got a 2.0 instead of 1.6 in the Peugeot. Very strange for a brand that pretends to be sporty. Where's the new Mini Cooper S with 270 hp? I really do hope something is coming. The power it has now was nice 10 years ago..

What's very disappointing is that the MINI uses the same engine as the RC-Z, except BMW don't offer it in full fat spec.

Nope, that's not correct - the PSA-BMW Prince engine collaboration on MINI ends with this 3rd generation of New MINI. Klier was referring to the new BMW 2.0 turbo engine in the recently release Cooper S.

The previous-generation models of Countryman, Paceman and Coupe-Roadster continue to make use of the 1.6 litre turbo Prince engine.

Quoted too much of kliers post, this first part was referring to the Paceman, TT, RC-Z test. The MINI and RC-Z use the same engine, the RC-Z has the full fat version and the MINI has not.

Less power and much more Co2, weird or what?

@KiwiRob and @martinbo are both right. In the first part I was referring to the Paceman which has the Prince engine. And in the second part it was about the new 2.0 in the newest Mini Cooper S, but I only mentioned it because it has similar power to the old.

Just as I thought so, Leon Cupra 280 is much slower around Sachsenring than the RCZ R:

1:40,40 min - Peugeot RCZ R
1:40,60 min - BMW M3 DKG
1:40,90 min - BMW M235i
1:41,73 min - Volkswagen Golf VII R
1:42,30 min - Seat León Cupra 280
1:42,91 min - Opel Astra OPC
1:44,48 min - Ford Focus ST '12
