Vs Autobild: BMW 740d vs. Mercedes S 450 CDI

I don´t think we should wait too much to say bye bye to the 450 CDI.

Yeah, BMW is coming with an even more powerful diesel soon. Mercedes should do the same. Maybe an updated V8 diesel to go against the tri turbo I6 unit...

The 7er interior looks so much better than the S! I strongly believe that the lower part of the centre console of the S looks annoyingly empty.

Other than that, both are fantastic cars! I wouldn't mind any of those two :D

Mercedes S-Class interior looks more elegant and upmarket - less clutter. The BMW's interior looks a touch more modern and tech-laden.

The BMW's performance to fuel consumption & emissions ratios is far superior - a testament to the best diesel engine in a passenger car today. I also feel that the BMW is the better looking of the two vehicles (by a nose hair) but that's entirely subjective.

I'm a little surprised that despite having less power and less torque and less gears the BMW is faster in acceleration and equal in mid-range times. Is it only because the BMW is 98kg lighter?
I think it would be better for BMW to equip 740d with a V8 4.0L engine rather than a 3.0L engine.

No need for a V8 engine in my opinion. The 6-cylinder is lighter, needs less fuel and has equal data for perfomance and horsepower! :usa7uh: The new 6 diesel is just perfect for the 7-series!!

Do you have the power and torque graphs for the two cars? This would go some way to explaining how the BMW is able to extract better performance from its twin-turbo, six cylinder 740d. It's definitely the better option for the diesel engine under the efficient dynamics program.

Diesels and turbocharging are a match made in heaven; the resulting outputs from innovative forced induction shows proven superiority over displacement and cylinder count. Hence, the expected tri-turbo development...

Exactly :usa7uh:

The BMW has a smaller engine, even weaker, but much better performance and more important for this kind of vehicles - better economy.

BMW all the way

I totally agree with both you and Ree but i only wanted to say that 730d would be a better label for a 6-cylinder 3.0L engine than 740d.It is just a little annoying for me to have a car which labels 740d but has a 3.0L engine instead of a 4.0L engine.;)

Pretty certain the BMW performance is better due to lack of turbo lag, it'll be much quicker off the mark. I wish MB would get their diesels together - they used to lead the diesel category. The engine on our C320 CDI has awful lag....

Okay, you're right on this - probably they should have named this V6 diesel 735d… :usa7uh: …but they wanted to show, that this is a new version and not the already known 272 and 286 hp version…

I agree with you on this, and regret that the model's name no longer represents the engine size. It seems, however, all models are going this way since more and more engines are getting forced induction thus requiring smaller capacity for the same level of performance. A blow to BMW's model naming method, which was so logical few years ago.

Yes, i think 735d is a better choice.

Yip, that's what I was alluding to by requesting the power and torque graphs.

The twin-turbos mounted sequentially on the BMW six cylinder diesel give the engine a wider operating rev-range, by pre-charging the smaller, high pressure turbo at low rpm brings torque in earlier in the rev range, and the larger low pressure turbo enables a higher flow rate to be maintained at high rpm (for a diesel). Max power at 4400 rpm is very impressive for a diesel and I've heard that it'll pull strongly to 5000 rpm.

An associate of mine has an E320 CDI and whilst lag is present, I haven't noticed it to be "awful". Seems that the 7G-Tronic 'box shifts quickly enough into a lower gear to keep the torque on the boil.

Sequential turbocharging, notwithstanding, is a vital ingredient in making diesel engines work over a wider rev range.

SWB looks far better on the BMW than the Benz. Or it could be that I'm just use to seeing LWB version of the S-class all the time.

LOL....What the....????

Is this new or something, taking off the engine cover????

Klier, that is the first thing I thought when I saw that photo.
