AutoBild: A8 4.2 TDI Q vs 740d vs S 450 CDI

I wonder what is MB going to do with this V8 diesel engine, they can´t sell it the next year, so maybe with see a tri-turbo V6 diesel, as they introduced such a concept a few years ago.

It kind of strikes me as ironic when i read 'criticism' saying a car such as the S 450 CDI gets criticized '..for not being sporty enough'....

I agree. In this class, not being Sporty enough isn't a criticism. These Car Mags are ridiculous with how 1-track they are, they hurl 5000 lb Luxo behemoths around a track, and criticize them if they ride too soft and plush. :t-crazy2:

What I do find interesting is, as much as I love the 221, seeing it next to an F01 is starting to get me to, for the first time, sense any "datedness" about it. The F01 is such a clean and precise design. I think it's my favorite car out right now, perhaps.

The A8 is a yawn-fest. Perhaps the nicest interior in this class it might seem (have to sit in one), but way too boring, and worst of all, has no sense of occasion/elegance demanded from a car of its caliber.

What ever happened to the diesotto engine.:t-hands:

Does anybody know about the future additions to the A8's engine lineup? Will there be another (gasoline) V8 above the 4.2 FSI? What about the W12?

:usa7uh:
A gas engine that will follow the diesel engine combustion cycle.
Yup, no spark plugs. ;)

expected results..the newest first..it would be a outrage if it was anything else..

Whats not expected is that the S still looks better than the rest..:D

The S is considerably older than the other two, so the disadvantage clearly produced these results. The style though, as you said, is still superior.

Although what I would like to see most of all is that Audi engine adapted to have dry-sump lubrication, mated to the PDK, and dropped in a Panamera. There is the ultimate GT.

It's a hell of an achievement by Audi.

Oh not the fact that it won this group test, more the fact that they turned arguably the best looking car in this class (and that includes all comers) to arguably the worst looking in the class. All done in the space of one model change....incredible. :t-banghea

Totally agreed. The new A8 looks awful. :t-crazy2:

Was out in both diesel versions of the A8 today, 3.0TDI and the 4.2TDI. It is an incredibly accomplish machine and I have to say that since driving it I can understand fully why it's winning many of the comparison tests, extremely smooth, extremely quiet and extremely refined. Of the two I would save the money and pick the 3.0TDI, simply because in such cars speed is less of an importance, but I must say that the mighty 4.2TDI is one seriously quick car, in fact it feels in normal situations more potent than my S4 or the M3 I owned previously, though obviously it doesn't feel as agile as either of them.

Many? Can you point to one other test besides this one which compares the A8 to the competition. I am curious cause I didn't find any posted here besides this one.

And that guy from Auto Mundial said the new A8 looks better that the 7 and S...
Shame, I will make a reservation for him at the AA :all_cohol

Sorry, no contest in the looks department F01 looks best in - and - out!;)

Thanks, EnI:t-cheers: just what the doctor ordered.
i guess you can strip me of my sober chips, cause i thinkthe a8 looks better than both of them in those pics and thats even with out full leds:t-cheers:

autobild tested
these cars not with the same engines.. results were the same though

I agree, the A8 looks really dull. S-class for me. The S600 I saw last weekend looked better than any A8 coulde ever wish to do. The A8 is a good car, no doubt, but in this class - so what! This is purely about emotion and that department the Audi has yet to visit.
