I think it's because they had an NSX and a GTR and were looking for something priced between the two. In the UK:

NSX - £140k
540C - £126k
GTR - £80k

Whereas (base price):

Turbo S - £146k
570S - £143k

This is why the 570S is routinely paired with the Turbo S in tests. If they'd put a Turbo S in this test, they'd really have had to include a 570S too.

Track looks very damp anyway, hence why the 0-30mph times were so bad I suspect.

The McLaren is crazy quick. Cannot imagine how much quicker the 570, 675, 650 or 12C would have in place of the 540.

Not that much quicker honestly looking at the times measured by magazines. The 540C is best performance/price balance buy
