Audi's new S lineup

Just the Facts:

•The revamped Audi S6, S7 and S8 all are slated to arrive in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2012, a company spokesperson tells Inside Line.
•A new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 replaces the previous naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10.
•Acceleration and fuel economy both are enhanced.

INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi will bring its new S6, S7 and S8 performance models to the U.S. in the third quarter of 2012, a company spokesperson told Inside Line. In addition, a brand-new Audi Allroad wagon, based on the A4, will arrive at U.S. dealers next fall, most likely as a 2013 model.

The latest-generation S models will debut in two weeks at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show and will go on sale in Europe next spring.

The big news is under the hood, where a new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, with stop-start and cylinder-deactivation technologies, replaces the previous naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10.

In the S6 and S7, the 4.0 TSFI is rated at 414 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, compared with 435 hp and 398 lb-ft in the previous S6. With power delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed S tronic gearbox, 0-60 acceleration is trimmed to less than 4.8 seconds in the S6 sedan and to less than 4.9 seconds in the S6 Avant and the S7. Top speed, as usual, is electronically governed to 155 mph.

In the flagship S8, the 4.0 TSFI is boosted to 512 hp and 479 lb-ft, compared with 450 hp and 398 lb-ft in the previous S8. With power flowing through an eight-speed Tiptronic, 0-60 acceleration is slashed to less than 4.2 seconds, from 4.9 seconds for the older 5.2 V10 version.

Performance isn't the whole story either. Average fuel economy climbs to 24 mpg in the new S6 and S7 and to 23 mpg in the S8.

The S models share some common elements, notably sport-tuned adaptive air suspension with variable damping, larger wheels and tires (19- and 20-inch rims on the S6/S7, 20s and 21s on the S8), subtle visual enhancements and an array of cutting-edge driver-assistance systems.

Among the options are a rear sport differential (standard on the S8), carbon fiber-ceramic brake discs and high-end Bang & Olufsen audio systems.

The cockpits also receive special treatment, with generous applications of leather and brushed aluminum, as well as a choice of real wood inlays.

Audi says all of the options on the standard A6, A7 and A8 also are available on the S versions.

Inside Line says: Leave it to Audi to figure out how to improve performance and fuel economy — a conundrum that many other automakers are still trying to sort out.

Hmmm Audi's S line is to die for...
I don't know what happened with me I see myself riding in VAG cars only :D
I'm really interested in the S8 now... price it right and I'm sold :)
Are these official photos of the cars ?

Is this a suggestion that Audi's S tronic gearbox can't cope with the same kind of torque figures that BMW's version can or is it simply the view that a traditional automatic would best suit the style of car and driving one might do the the bigger, more luxurious S8?

I think it's the latter, Deckhook - purely that the smoother, more creep-capable, more geared, 8 speed automatic would be more appropriate in a large luxury - albiet sportier - limousine.

Interesting thoughts though... who makes Audi's inline AWD-compatible 7 speed S-Tronic 'box (ZF?) and who makes BMW's 7-speed M-DCT RWD gearbox in the M5 (Getrag?)
Also is the 8 speed automatic transmission in all these new models the ZF 8-speeder?

Dunno. South, UCG or Wunderkind to the rescue...

I don't believe you are right about this because of the new 313hp diesel being introduced in the A6, it's not getting the S tronic either and has the same torque figures as the S8. I think their gearbox can't cope with the load which will be a shame for the RS6 fans if it is the case because if you can't have a true manual then the next best thing is a DCT.

Also Getrag do make the M-DCT for BMW and it's ZF that make the 8 speed autos that both of them use but I don't think it's ZF that make the S tronic though I can't think of any of the other transmission manufacturers other than these two.

Nah, 650 Nm is too arbitrary... Porsche's 7 speed DCT gearbox can handle 800 Nm now in the Panamera Turbo S. So I think it's less about the torque rating and more about the fit-for-purpose, suitability and application - which, in the case of the S8, a proper automatic gearbox (especially one as smooth-shifting with as many gears) is the right way to go. There's this dogma out there that dual clutch transmssions are superior in every instance - they're not, just look at the Cayenne: same engine as Panamera but automatic 8 speed 'box instead.

Formidable competition for next years M550d the M750d and the M650d Gran Coupe.

Really? BMW is going to introduce the 7er to M-Sport with a diesel? While, I am excited for this diesel engine, I can't believe a true M7 is not on the way.

With regards to the S8's V8 and the S6/7's V8 does the differing intake plumbing contribute to differing power production or is something else as well?

Imo, S6 is by far the best-looking of all. Looks even better & hot in that red. Loved it.

Competition in what? Economy?:)

The transmission in my car 0B5 (DL501-7Q) is good for up to 550nm.
Seeing as s6/s7 are rated at exactly 550nm does anyone know which transmission are they using?
Looking at my 2l 211ps 350nm engine and the s6/s7 engine 4l 420ps shouldn't the s6/s7 engine produce near 700nm?
I hope they didn't use the old transmission and limit the torque of the engine so that the transmission would cope.
The dsg in the veyron copes with 1250nm so it's doable. If audi didn't have a suitable transmission for the s8 couldn't they use the porsche transmission?

S7 looks beautiful. I have seen the wheels of s7, it looks fine, but If Audi gives it the same large wheels of a7 it will look stunning!!!!

BMW M DCT and VAG DSG are made by Getrag. All 8 speeds from BMW and Audi are ZF :)

Doesn't Borg Warner make VW's 6 speed double cltuch transmission, and Luk Clutch systems make the 7speed DSG?

Of the ZF auto, I'm up to speed so to speak. What I want to know is about who supplies Audi's and Porsche's longitudinally mounted dual clutch gearboxes.

The new Evo's (or the last one since we get it late here) article on A6 3.0TDI says the reason it uses the 8 speed auto and not DSG like other A6s is cause the DSG can't handle the torque which is funny enough same as the S8 - 479lbft.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
