A5/S5/RS5 Audi RS5 vs . Maserati Gran Turismo S

The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive and grand touring coupé cars produced by Audi. Production: 2007-
It's maybe worth a separate thread? Telling people how the RS5 fares compared to the M3 is hardly relevant when it is compared to the Maser, is it?

They were general comments on why the RS5 is a better allrounder than the competition. But the facts remain that in the real world where liberties can't be taken and caution is needed, the benefits of added traction offered by it's quattro system makes it a more efficient tool on most back road when driven by 'normal' drivers.

On a back road, most of us are not looking for a more "efficient tool" but for a more fun tool. After all that is what back roads are for. No one cares if you are a fraction of a sec faster or slower on a back road. It is at a track where the last fraction of a sec matters, and that is where an efficient tool would help (GTR being a perfect example), but strangely RS5 comes short there.

This is a really silly comparison. Its like comparing a CL63 to a M3.

I find the only time that the competition has any more fun is when driven above 8/10th, something that doesn't happen on public roads. There the pleasure comes from the knowledge that you can nail the throttle early without anything scary happens.

What fun is there in knowing that you have 400+hp and seldom getting the chance to use it all.

But each to their own.

Come on guys, the RS5 is a great car. It's just that most here don't think that it should be compared with a car like the Maserati Gran Turismo S.

And please give us a break with the VAG haters rhetoric. It's a poor comparison, that's all there is to it.

This is the problem with the RS5 because it's a difficult car to categorise, unlike the (sorry for mentioning this but it's the only way to get my point across) M3 which we all know is an out and out driver's car and true sports coupe the RS5 covers a much wider audience, right from the sports coupe to the grand tourer. So while some might feel this is a silly comparison there are others of which this magazine is one which see the RS5 as more of a grand tourer but unfortunately in the grand tourer sector the range of cars and prices vary greatly.

Personally I think Audi got it wrong with this car, yes it's a brilliant machine being able to do both roles very convincingly but it does have identity issues and many consider it sitting between the M3 and the M6. If they had chosen one of the other it would probably have out shone either of them and all of these debate wouldn't have happened.

I'm not going to mention this car because my info on the RS5 appeared to be not completely accurate. But you are right, this car could very well answer the questions directed at the RS5.

Ok you again feel compelled to bring M3 into it again and again, but just repeating something doesn't make it so. M3 is far from out and out sports car. The GTS, yes, the vanlla version is far from it. There is nothing more inherently GT about RS5 than M3. M3 offers just as much comfort as the RS5 and if the comparisons are to be believed even better ride. Just one odd comparison doesn't make RS5 a more accomplished GT. Like I said You could compare the M3 to the Masserati and you would get exactly the same result with M3 winning cause it is more sporty and cheaper- but that doesn't make it a better GT.

I'm not trying to turn this into an RS5 vs M3 thing, stop suggesting this. I am only showing how the two cars differ and suggesting that is the reason why reviewers are having a hard time categorising it, after all when has the M3 not been compared against other true sports coupes?

I personally think it's weight is a perfect example why Audi didn't see the RS5 as a true sportscar. Instead giving it the technology to overcome this, though not as successful as they would have hoped.

That sounds like Audi made the RS5 weigh 1,800kg intentionally. I don't think so.

i still believe the rs5 behaves more like a gt. the heated debate rolls on though.

One wacko comparison doesn't mean reviewers are having trouble categorizing the car. Here is a GTR vs Bentley CGT comparison, oooh, let us all delude our self into thinking GTR competes with the Bentley. Heck, GTR even won cause it is quicker and $186000 cheaper, so using 'footie logic' let us all conclude GTR is a better GT too.

Not in the slightest. What I meant was it clearly wasn't very high up their list.

After all it weighs more than the similar engined S5.

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
