Side view cameras will be an option. But I don‘t know if this will be in all markets.

I guess they are legal in most markets. In some of the more 'cautious' markets (like Germany), cars with camera-based rear view systems needed a special permit at registration. Hopefully, Audi dealers will take care of that part.
What I'm more concerned about is the position of the screens in the door. This will take quite some time and effort to really get used to. In my opinion, this is pseudo-high-tech. In sum, such solution offers no real advantage in contrast to conventional mirrors (quite the contrary). And please spare me the fuel consumption argument ...

With reversing cameras mandatory on cars sold in the USA from May 2018 and 2021 in the EU, there is clearly faith in camera-based systems.

I await to hear more about how and if Audi's system is superior to physical mirrors.

Still not completely sold on camera-based side view "mirrors." Regarding mandatory reversing cameras, that at least augments the view from the rear window, not completely replacing it.

I strongly dislike that you have to look downwards to look at the screens. Maybe placement could be moved to the A-Pillars in the future so that the eyes remain in line the windows and windshield.

The solution of Audi is 'simply' a replacement of the traditional way of doing it. The cameras are in the same spot as the traditional mirrors and the displays are in close proximity to the spot of the traditional mirrors.

Why not put the cameras more upfront (maybe integrated into the front light fixture), giving them a wider field of view. And the displays I would put left and right of the main display (left and right of the steering wheel) . This would mean a major redesign of the dashboard... but why not ? Just my 2 or 3 cents

Carmakers are testing different solutions ... Eg. BMW combined complete side & rear views in a display in the "rear view mirror".

What has not yet been mentioned is still another solution which projects the image into the 'mirror triangle'. Imo, that is the prefect position as drivers don't need to re-learn. I don't really want to know how >60 years old people (and there are a lot of those in the D-segment and above) use or rather don't use other solutions after having driven 40 years. And such changes are not incremental, they don't sneak in, this is a shocker.

A well positioned camera image with intelligent and parsimonious augmentation features could be a gain. Everything else is risky game.
