Audi is working on a range-wide revamp of its design language to establish a greater variety of design cues for its expanding range of saloons, SUVs and sportscars.
Speaking to Autocar last night at a design event in London, Audi design director Stefan Sielaff said the company was already deeply into the project, which will closely define a set of individual themes for each of the three major model families.
Under the acronym ‘AQR’, where A stands for Audi (saloons and hatches) Q for Quattro (SUV models) and R for sports cars, Sielaff’s team are specifiying new design values, like the slope-back angle for the grille on the three types of models, headlamp shape and body surfacing.
“We know that some people think our saloons look too alike and are well into a project to change that,” he says, “we will mainly do that with the proportions of those cars”.
The AQR system, for example, will ensure that all Audi’s saloons will have a more sloped-back grille, while the Q models will feature more upright grilles.
“And it will mean differences, say in the way the headlights meet up with the grille; the design details will be different,” says Sielaff.
What Audi won’t compromise, however, is the company’s brand value. “That comes form the board down. In the luxury market brand always comes first. We can’t change that.“
Audi is also going through a major project to define how its electric e-tron cars will look in the future.
So far the e-tron concepts have followed the proportions of traditional, IC-engined cars. But Sielaff says there is a view that the EV’s styling should reflect the different nature of the powertrain.
“Some people are saying we don’t change the styling for a diesel and petrol car. But there is another view that, for example, a steam locomotive looks very different to an electric one. We’ll have to see how this one works out,“ he says.

Looking alike is not Audi's problem. What they need is a design language that is actually exciting. Modern Audis are nowhere near ugly. The design is nice. Just too politically correct and safe.

That's only my opinion, of course!

:t-cheers:

You either get Audi's design language or you don't, if you don't then look else where because there's a huge varieties on offer but if you do like it then you always will.

abt ****** time..but ile belive it when i see it!!!

Will be interesting to follow. I love Audis, but I will never forgive them for for example ******* up the new A8, cause of the similarity to other models - structure. I to want a change.

Forget the words, let`s see this happen ! I am a Merc fan and for me that`s the disavantage of the Audi, the looking alike design.

It looks like I'm the only one here who doesn't want Audi to change! Recently, I've grown fond of the familiarity of their designs, yet still having small details that distinguish each model. To me, Audi is almost like the Apple of carmakers; very sleek and simplistic. I hope they retain this with their future design directions.

Good move. But it isn't that Audi's look bad or boring. Its just not my cup.

This is great news! One that that really got on my nerves was that Audi's LED's aren't the same throughout their range. There is no brand identity. This may help that! I do not like the fact that BMW's all look the same.

One reason I loved audis for: they did not follow BMW and Mercedes direction (their simplicity, unique, clean and proportional designs)

Audi I beg do not follow, do what Porsche did. Revolution

I saw several new A6's Avant today its really anonymous and boring. Audi have better looking Audis but a new design direction wouldn't hurt.

I actually prefer the look of the A6 Avant out of all the non-coupe Audis on sale today. I don't think anyone does estate design as well as Audi and I don't see this changing any time soon.

My favourite audi is a6, I think it looks better than A8. I liked very very much the a8 when i saw it first time, but in one year i was so bored of it. Omg, imagine that that car was launched on 12 dec 2009 or something like that, and I am already bored of it. How is it possible ? I am sick of audi models with only the shape of Led being the only element wich distinguished their models. The a6 is better, I like very much the rear, and the agressive front end. At Audis I really love the interiors. That`s the beauty of MB, the diversity design of their models.

Current Audis look nice. But having details that offer some differentiation will give each car line its own distinct character. I think they ought to take a page out of Mercedes' playbook and take their approach. BMW's, to me, offer enough distinction but I can see how others can find very little discerning style differences. I still have some troubles distinguishing between the rear of the 5er and the new 3er. Maybe seeing in person will help.

Speaking about details, another thing that Audi must correct, is their interiors. I mean that in photos they look good. But the execution could be a million times better, with better materials used, especially in the A4, which is full of cheap and shiny plastic.

Plastic details do not add neither to a sporty feel, nor to a luxurious one. They only make the car look tacky.

Funny, I had an M3 and XF between the S5 and S4, I didn't feel this way at all. All I noticed was the different path that each designer took with those brands, each felt as luxurious and well made as each other.

You speak about highend models. Version of A4 that moste people buy have some questionable interior materials. Not what I expected from Audi.

For instance

I was comparing similarly prices alternatives which I think is valid. I'm sure you would agree that a 3 series minus the Satnav hump looks less than impressive too.

The S5 has some cheap feeling materials, like the vast expanse of painted silver plastic panel surrounding the instruments and the LCD display. The plastic on the transmission tunnel is rock hard and easy to scratch. Having said that it is not worse than what BMW and Mercedes has to offer.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
