Reports are surfacing once again hinting at possible future collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin. Earlier reports had forecast that the two firms could share engines and even platforms, the aborted Lagonda crossover concept reportedly having been based on the Mercedes GL-Class. Additional reports had further suggested that Daimler was looking at buying stake in Aston, however neither bit of gossip has materialized into anything tangible as of yet.

That could change, however, according to Britain's weekly Autocar magazine, in speaking with Mercedes chief Dieter Zetsche. The affable Dr. Z hinted at possibly sharing technology – the kind of stuff which a small company like Aston couldn't develop on their own – with AML in the future. That could include, of course, anything from airbags and spark plugs to engines and platforms, leaving the door wide open for speculation, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz might collaborate, says Dieter Zetsche

According to Daimler’s boss Dieter Zetsche, a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin could take place. Apparently, smaller brands need help with new technology and Mercedes-Benz could do new partnerships in the future. Furthermore, some sources said that Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz could collaborate on a range of ventures, from engine supply to entirely new models. Back in 2008, reports suggested that Daimler was looking to buy a substantial stake in Aston Martin. If this collaboration will happen, then Aston Martin could take the 6.2-liter V8 engine found on the SLS AMG.

This naturally aspirated engine delivers an impressive 571 hp (on the SLS AMG, but according to Mercedes-Benz engineers it is capable to deliver more power) and a maximum torque of 650 Nm of torque. This engine can push the SLS AMG from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds and to a top speed electronically limited to 317 km/h (197 mph). The engine has a combined fuel consumption of 13.2 litres per 100 km.
Furthermore, Aston Martin could also get the new 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine found on the recently introduced 2011 CL 63 AMG and capable to deliver 420 kW (571 hp) and 900 Nm of torque. This engine uses an advanced AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. This engine delivers a combined fuel consumption of only 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

Any future collaborations will centre around peripheral items and electronic systems (safety systems, hybrids, perhaps). There will be no collaborations on engines and platforms.

I think it is all for the better.
