Are we at a crossroad?
Geopolitics as of the moment indicate a certain heightened degree of strife.
Europe: Spain, Migrant crisis, Ukraine and Russian resurgence, Brexit
UK: Brexit
NAM: USA- Trump disaster, NAFTA threat to regional GDP
SAM: Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil
Africa: Political unrest in SA; Mali and Niger, Somalia etc
Middle East: Syrian crisis(migrant problems for Europe,ISIS); Yemen, Iraq(ISIS, and Kurdistan referendum); Iran( Nuclear deal, Yemen crisis, Syrian etc); Turkey-political prisoners etc; Qatar versus the other Gulf States
Asia Pacific: North-South Korean crisis+USA; South China Sea mess involving China and its neighbors.

This is troubling.

Indeed it is troubling. Also, there is still always the possibillty of another massive financial crisis - quantitative easing did not fix the systemic problems with the Global economy and many central bankers are concerned about low-levels if inflation.

The C.E.O. of JPMorgan (Jamie Dimon) keeps calling Bitcoin a scam - so one has to wonder why JPMorgon has been buying Bitcoin?

You have to be careful, there are a lot of scams taking advantage of Bitcoin and other Cryptos. I've been told Litecoin is a good.

Indeed it is. Africa is going towards 5 Billion!!! people until 2100. Even only for the next 10 years there will be an increase about half a Billion! The Problem is: We obviously can't teach them from outside, what Europe learned/suffered from in the middle Ages! So in Africa you meet tribal based social Systems with a fertility of about 6-7 with humanitarian help from outside, which allows this trend to go on...
The outcome is already (and will be much stronger in the near future) a great Exodus towards Europe. What will happen if 200+ Millions from the african continent gain access to european welfare systems? You do the math.

If Africa could ever overcome problems with corruption and tribal conflict, it could easily be the most powerful continent on Earth. Africa should learn from China: education is the most vital thing. It would be a wonderful thing to see Africa take control of its own destiny and not continue to be exploited by outside forces and internal conflict.

I had the opportunity to get into it Bitcoin @ $10, but I declined and I still have the same reservation.
The fundamentals of an actual currency are backed by a lot of factors but most importantly its economic powerhouse or activity of the country.
The problem with crypto-currencies for me is that they are backed by nothing, and have no value other than the allure of rarity. Unlike gold which does have an industrial value-intrinsic value, crypto-currencies have nothing so you can call them a bubble.
Secondly, crypto-currencies are at the mercy of federal governments, and that makes it risky for me.

You have to understand that the likes of Jamie are all in the business of making money, and I think to him it is all about the trade. A few good friends of mine that are economist are also scratching their heads.

So I stick to my intuition and avoid that class of assets( not sure if I see them as asset class).

The problem with Africa is complex like you pointed out.
History doesn't help, but for sure the people will have to wake up and kick their leadership in the behind.
The West tried to atone for some that history but for how along?

Corruption is the biggest problem in my opinion.
The West tried to stop the outflow of capital, and also attached governance as a stipulation for assistance/loans- what did the African leaders do, they aligned with China for loans and assistance that have none of that. Repayment of such Chinese loans is through resources and access to market.

I think in terms of scale and depth, this period seems be a bit different.
But you are right, it has always been the case. Maybe the difference is that that is history so the personal experience and rationalization is missing whilst in this moment, one could project the direct impact on the current way of life.

Iraq(ISIS, and Kurdistan referendum);

Without getting too much into it, this whole "Kurdistan referendum" really bothers me. Problem is that VERY few know about the people the Kurds themselves are oppressing right this moment, as they have been doing over a long long time. The media tend to show one side of the story, and therefore they decide where our sympathies should lie. There's always two (and often more..) sides of the story, they should all be heard.
