Apple's 4th-generation iPhone revealed

Will really be something if the iPhone "HD" debuts with none of these features. The whole interwebz will explode with disappointment.

I will cut my balls of if the iPod HD doesn't come with a front facing camera or a higher resolution screen.

I fear Apple will now suffer from the Osborne effect because fewer people will now buy tthe 3GS when they know what's around the corner. Regardless of when you bought your iPhone or iPod touch, you will badly want the iPod/iPhone HD. This is a major revamp and I forecast craigslist being flooded with thousands of iPhones in the next coming weeks.

My Blackberry Storm is a piece of junk. Shame i'm stuck with it untill February 2011. :t-banghea

Got to hate those 2 year contacts. I'll have my HTC TP2 until October 2011. I wish Sprint would get this phone. At&t charges way too much for their unlimited plans. If Verizon get it, probably will be just as expensive.

nokia was way ahead of the game back in 07 i guess ;)

wow..just saw this thread. This iPhone for real? Looks pretty disappointin, IMO.

Hope it's just a proto.

With a built in face fronting camera, the iPhone 4G better have a battery powered by kryptonite or else the battery will deplet faster than Tiger Woods can go through a pack of condoms in one night.

Everyday I leave the house with a Nokia E52 and an iPod touch in hand. Some question why I carry two devices when I could have just bought a top of the range iPhone with the money I spend on my two devices. My rationale is simple.

The problem with all-in-one devices is battery life. I always laugh at iPhone owners who walk around with brightness set to 20% while mine is always on max. Secondly these iPhone owners carry their USB cable with them everywhere, ready to charge the device 2-3 times in one day OR even keep it connected to a power source as if it was a laptop.

Last week I downloaded Geo-Defence, a highly addicted game worth buying. But playing it intently for 40-60min, the battery drains fast. And this is only a device I use for music playback and casual gaming once in a while. I cannot imagine myself using it for video chat too, let alone phone calls. The compromises in the name of battery life would be too much.

With two devices I can listen to music and make phone calls without worrying about conserving battery for the other. Sometimes I go for two days without charging either devices. In fact. My Nokia only gets charged once or twice every week. It gives me a peace of mind to be able to use my device in any way I like without conciously worrying about battery life.

So until battery technology has caught up with the ever-more features manufacturer are packing into phone, I'll keep carrying two devices.

Hassan: I agree that the iPhone battery issue was a major concern before the 3GS. but with the 3Gs, it is much much better than the older 3G model. Plus, use the iPhone as an iPod with the screen locked and browse songs by double clicking the home button, I can guarantee you minimum close to null usage of battery. Once I took a trip 400Km with only 4% remaining in the battery and iPhone was playng music all the time during the trip, I kept it locked to avoid screen draining the remaining battery.

Plus: Nokia's are among the worst when it comes to batterys. the 1 month experience is always the best. and it starts deteriorating from there. Point is, play with your Nokia as much as you do with your iPhone and you will have the same results.

There is a mobile charger for iPhones BTW (rechargeable battery that can be connected to the bottom pin connector).

according to the 'tear-down' report on Gizmodo, the battery on the iPhone 4G is bigger then that of the 3GS.

Half of me still suspects that this may be the greatest piece of viral marketing ever foisted upon the interwebz.

As for all this battery talk - Battery life is an issue when you have lots of call time and data in-play. Wi-Fi and G3 really sap the life out of your battery like nobody's business - as I learned the hard way last week at LAX.

I was stuck in a busy terminal and was desperate to get out a call, email or text. Because the phone kept losing signal it was in a perpetual state of scanning for its network... kinda like 'flooring it' for battery power. I also used in-flight WiFi and that made quick work of what was left of the battery as well.

Because there's so many emergency-measure products available for the iPhone, I don't see the integrated battery as such a big deal. I've never owned a spare cell battery and these kinds of dire situations only happen once or twice a year.

As for Centurion's post about gaming - Gaming doesn't tax battery power in the slightest. If you put your iPhone into airplane mode it will last astonishingly long. I once flew to Germany playing Brothers in Arms nonstop for about 6 - 7 hours and didn't even put a dent in the iPhone's power reserve.

Just few points I'd like to clear as an RF engineer, Handset battery drains no matter you are talking or idling (idle mode). The phone is always in a signalling phase with the network whether a call is active (Dedicated mode) or idle mode where measurement reports are being sent to the network to decide to Handover the serving cell (or reselect if no call is active) to another cell. Measurement reports are periodic and there is also periodic location updates in the HLR (Home Location Register) where all user data has to be updated to the network (current location - Authentication status - privilages & services..etc).

3G drains more battery power because: in 3G all users transmit on the same frequency channel being differentiated only by their respective "code" in which user data is considered useful for handsets with the specific KEY to decipher that code, otherwise all users generate Noise & interfere each other. To keep it as low as possible, Power control has to be introduced to maintain transmitted power as low as possible (depending on user location & attenuation factors). Thus, battery will drain faster.

BTW guys, apple sent me the OS 4 Beta1 which totally failed to upload to iPhone 3G/3GS. They promised beta2 but I dunno when. One handset only managed to install OS 4 (and it crashed later) but I had sometime to play with it. It is great (Multi tasking and all). But not a huge leap forward compared to OS2 Vs OS3.

Nop but I benchmark SWs in terms of radio performance (Blackberrys and iPhone so far, and Android 1.X once and soon 2.1). I have a team which do the evaluation (being a senior manager) but out of curiousity sometimes I try new sw my self.

honestly the 3gs battery life is ridiculous too. 100% before I sleep, wake up, and 10% gone with all apps. closed (because i switched off the phone then turned it back on before hand) Stand by is OK but as soon as using the internet, goes out of battery in no time.

^^ lol!

I just upgraded my to the 3GS a fortnight ago; the sales rep could have said something! :chair6fm:

Gizmodo are punk-ass b¡tches for outing this guy.

Good article:
Why Apple Could Sue Gawker Over 'Lost' iPhone Story - DailyFinance

Osna, when I first heard that Gizmodo released the guy's name, I felt the same way. Then I start thinking that this is more to protect his gig at Apple so that if he was some nameless guy, Jobs and his goons could easily sweep him under the rug. If he is let go in the most unceremonious of ways, he may have some recourse. While he mucked majorly, I don't think what he did was an act of malevolence...unless there's more to this than I know. *cue creepy X-files music*
