April 2007
Ford said it is recalling more than 500,000 Escape sport-utility vehicles after 50 reports of engine fires caused by corroded brake parts, Bloomberg reported.
The recall only affects conventional gasoline powered versions of the Escape from the 2001 to 2004 model years. Gasoline-electric hybrid Escapes aren't included in the recall.
The potential problem is caused by water, road salt or other contaminants entering a connector in anti-lock braking systems and causing corrosion. Warning lights may be activated and in some cases the component may burn, a Ford spokesperson said. There have been no injuries reported.
Ford has notified dealers of the recall and is preparing to send letters to owners. Recalled vehicles will be checked at dealers and replacement of the anti-lock braking system component will be free.

Its amazing what costmcuts can lead to!!!

This is why no one buys Domestics in the US. Most other companies recalls are little things like seat belt issue, small electric glitch, water leaking into head lights, etc. The Domestics? Engine fires. Are you F-ing kidding me? That right there can kill a whole family. idiots.

coorect if i am wrong, but the ABS unit is at the wheel, and the engine between the wheels typically in an SUV higher, how idiotic must those engineers be so a break fire can spread to the engine? or did they pass gasoline condits by the breaks?
