Reviews AMG GT Road Trip

I just got back from a 3000 km round trip from South of France to Swiss mountains in my AMG GT. The car drove great, was "comfortable" (regular seats, enough trunk space), and got a little over 12L/km.

Lots of fun driving on mountain passes with few drifts, not on Furkapass, that was scary, lol

The one issue but not totally surprising was the ROAD NOISE. On rough highways (chip surface) like those in Italy, it was deafening... I had to lower the tire pressure at 1.9 bar to reduce the noise level... I was running 140km/h (2500 RPM) in 7th gear. MPSS at 14k km.

On smooth surfaces its a totally different car, can drive it fast and still listen music properly or talk.

I like this car... most of my driving is in town but isn't an ideal "road car". In the future I might sell it and get an S63 Coupe or Panamera, or I will take the A8 on road trips (even if its boring) and leave the AMG short drives.

As soon as I saw the title I came in here to learn about how you coped with the high road noise levels. I see it was bad as expected. Well I'm glad you had fun regardless- yes a S63/8-series might be better for you. I struggle with those choices personally because those vehicles are so big.

I had similar issues with the GT for road noise. Otherwise an exceptional car. Does anyone know if they improved that with the FL?

I haven't driven the FL car but I doubt it. Much like the extensively benchmarked Porsche 911, it got sacrificed to save weight.

The noise comes from the 20 inch rear tires, the sidewall looks thinner compared to 20 inch tires on AMG GT4. I'll try to find 19 inch tires for the rear like on front, I'm sure it will get better. There are a couple parts that need improvement on FL: the wheel wells are very thin, the under body of the whole car is basically the chassis metal, almost no insulation, and softer suspension.

Its a FUN car to drive on mountain roads or on any road with smooth surface. Was weird to see that people are looking at it like its some exotic car, even in Cannes or Saint Tropez where you see cool cars everywhere.

8 Series coupe is too big for a two seater, rear seats are for kids.
I wonder how S63 coupe rides, hopefully not like all AMG's stiff and noisy.
Or the Taycan maybe.

The S63 rides beautifully but is about the same size as the 8-series.

I think there's more space in the back seat of S coupe if I remember correctly. Its stiffer in comfort mode than the S560 coupe?

What about the Panamera, I've heard it can be comfortable like an S and sporty when you want it.

That’s correct, the S coupe’s back seat is a bit bigger. And yes it is indeed stiffer in comfort mode.

The Panamera never forgets its a Porsche. It never rides as well as an S-class but gets close enough considering how well it drives when you’re moving quickly. I think it looks boring though. AMG GT 4-door is a more enticing buy for me.

Personally, I’m looking for a new convertible. I’m sad there’s no E63 vert or Audi RS5 convertible. I need a GT drop top that’s not the size of a land yacht.

nah, s class coupe is bigger. 8 series is similar to the e class coupe in size.

You're right, but my point was the 8-series & S-class are significantly bigger in terms of length than the AMG GT.

Did you drive AMG GT C, or considered driving it? Maybe it rides better than GT/GT S?

Yeah, the Panamera isn't that bad ass but a low mileage 4S is around 85k euro and the GT4 53 it cost around 115k, I think it does not worth it. The GT4 63 is out of budget.

8 Series rear design is a mess, I'd rather have the M5.

I haven't driven the GT C but its pretty much the same car, just a bit wider, rear steering and more hp.

I just found on other thread that A45S has lots of tire noise, wtf is wrong with these AMG's.

8 Series is a Grand Touring Coupé, not a sports car. Comfort and luxury is given its due for long stretches on the highway or back roads. One must arrive refreshed, not abused.
