AMG declares the horsepower war ‘over’

It looks like Chevrolet’s Corvette isn’t the only model or maker to decide that horsepower figures have reached a good resting point. Mercedes’ AMG head has declared horsepower is “not our main focus,” instead the company will be gathering effort to improve interior and exterior appearance and quality, handling and the rest of the “overall package.”

AMG is currently happy with their power and performance levels relative to the rest of the market, and while the company won’t completely rule out further power advances, it will focus its might on improving efficiency and lowering CO2 emissions. The latter will be of paramount importance if they brand hopes to continue for long in most of the nations that constitute its largest markets, and certainly if it wants to do business in the EU, and increasingly, the U.S.

One of the main changes that may fuel the increase in economy and decrease in emissions: not all AMG models may get unique powerplants. In fact, there’s a good likelihood that AMG models could share engines with the normal Mercedes-Benz cars they are based on, according to Carpoint. An example of what AMG can do when it builds a custom engine, the 63-series engine, which powers the CLS63 AMG among others, is a fire-breathing maniac of automotive excess, producing in excess of 500hp in various trims. Unfortunately, fuel consumption is similarly excessive, clocking in at 16.5L/100km (14.25mpg US) in the combined cycle.

This compares fairly well to cars like Audi’s RS6, which grinds out 573hp from its 5.0L V10 engine. Remember, these are the horsepower figures for family sedans - yet there are supercars that can barely rival such figures. In fact, Audi’s own R8 comes in over 150hp shy of the RS6. Perhaps it really is time to focus on things besides power.

Lets see if BMW decides to twin turbo their V10 engine or not, then we will know if the war is really over.

The author forgotten to mention Audi did try to shove the monster engine into the R8, and it was literally too hot to handle.

Funny thing is that Audi said the same 1-2 years ago. Look what happen, now there is 580hp RS6.

So I guess we will be expecting a 700hp twin turbo AMG V8 in 1 or 2 years time?

Yeah right. I don't believe a word of it. The turbo version of the AMG V8 will push 750hp at some point. Lies, all lies. AMG having won the hp war so far I can't see them not wanting to keep that status.

Ok, guys unless you missed it this isnt internal combustion section. The thread is about Mercedes leaving horsepower war. Not another BMW vs MB thread ;)

CC, let's not turn this thread into mess, please.

That vs. thing must finish right now or i'm closing this thread.

OK?

Thank you!

:t-cheers:

This suck but I had to delete some posts since it wasnt relevant to this topic " AMG declares the horsepower war ‘over’".

Wrong section and offtopic.

I don't believe a word, Audi also said that and look to the RS6.

lOl, I don`t buy a word of it either!

Ultimate Power and huge capacity V8s has been the orignal AMG formula from the beginning back in 1967 before the competition even came on the scene. It will never change!

Remember these are pure AMG engines we are talking about.

Mercedes AMG have already announced that turbo-charging will be a key factor for AMG engines because turbos are cleaner than Kompressors. The power figures will indeed jump off the board and suprise us! It`s good to know that AMG is now focusing on the whole package like their compeditors. The C63 is proof of that.

Btw Just_me, do you have a link or source for this article?

Mercedes-Benz really doesn't have to worry about horsepower numbers anyway. With the AMG's V12s Benz has already won the war. Audi and BMW have no competitors to it, why should they worry.

Maybe if they try to beat Bugatti (which rumours have been going around) then that might be a concern. Benz is sitting pretty right now.

Right now I really don't see a major need to "improve interiors". The latest Mercedes-Benz products have been outstanding. The interior quality is great for each segment.

Exterior appearance? Well they haven't been "Bangle touched" so I think they have nothing to worry about. Maybe the R-class needs to be beefed up, but that's it.

Quality.....Not really a issue. Maybe better maintence programs.

Handling..... Luxury cars do not need to handle like sports cars. If AMG wants to do something special then so be it. The cars drive great. Let BMW do the sports stuff and Benz just needs to stay focused on luxury.

After visiting the Washington DC autoshow yesterday...Benz has nothing to worry about. The only vehicle that is not really doing them justice is the R-class. The look is ok with me, but I guess the mini van appearence is a little too much for people to swallow.

There three companies that are perfect..Bentley, Bugatti and Benz. There line-ups are well put together.

Well, so much for all the clean up the mods did... but yeah, the Bugatti line up amazes me, I always have such a tough time deciding which Bugatti to choose! ;)
