Americans too fat to drive?

Americans - like their cars - are getting heavier every year. Unfortunately, it seems the tested passenger capacities of the cars they drive are not keeping up. Two-seaters like the Mazda MX-5 and the Chevy Corvette aren’t rated to carry two 200lb (91kg) adults - and some, like the Cadillac XLR are just barely rated to carry an average American couple, reports USA Today.

It’s not just sporty coupes and roadsters that can’t handle the increased girth of their grocery-getting governors. Minivans (or MPVs), SUVs/crossovers, and sedans are all skimping on approved passenger weights. Examples include Acura’s TSX, which seats five people, as long as their average weight doesn’t exceed 170lb (77kg), and Mazda’s CX-7, which sports identical specifications.

Auto makers claim the weight limits are based on a mandatory federal formula that only allots 150lbs (68kg) for each passenger - a number which is clearly unrealistic for the average American. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) determined in 2004 the average American man weighs 190lb (86kg), while his female counterpart weighs 163lb (74kg).

While all of the cars involved can carry more weight than their ratings show, as Honda spokesperson Sage Marie says, automakers “can’t be responsible for the vehicle’s dynamic characteristics” if the maximum passenger weight is exceeded. Manufacturers reportedly build in a safety margin, though how much is unclear and likely varies between makes and models.

The bottom line: American bums are crossing the line between unhealthy and unsafe.

I think the real problem is the cars just keep getting smaller :D

However, it's been a while since any of these girls have seen their own feet. ;)

HOLLY CRAP ROB..................

The last time when I mentioned Americans and weight in this forum it didn't end well, actually i am too sick to type right now.

Well, if it gets out of control I lock the thread. It time to show your mature side ;)

LOL, I'm sorry -- I've got to stop making people vomit with my posts ;)

Took me a while to clean up the vomit from the keyboard :)

The Australians aren't that far behind as well. Just recently the government annoucned a plan to pay the obese population $170 AUD each to join a 12 week weight loss program. I reckon we really need it. I have seen a few drivers who weighs so much that they have actually cause the driver side of the car to tilt downwards. Scary.

Europeans are gaining a reputation as "fatties" as well. I can understand why. We have a lot of tasty food here that's loaded with CALORIES! :D

you mean like junk food, Mcdonalds, Burger king and other desserts imported from US :D

Not really, more like traditional cooking from various countries. Here in Germany people eat a lot of fatty pork meat, a lot of sugary desserts and sweets and have little or no exercise. :usa7uh:

I recently tried to lose weight.

But the stress ruined my diet and I quickly got bored of dressing like a Chav every morning to run at the park and worse: Getting late to work.

Actually my wife told me, that every morning I looked like an Adidas business card. If you are an overweight middle-aged bloke, you should NEVER EVER wear sporting clothes; you will look ridiculous.

Not to mention there is a constant feeling that "why on earth am I bothering doing it so?" I am married, I am a dad, my health is OK and I'm nearly pushing forty. It's time to relax and enjoy the pleasures of remote controls and DSG gearboxes...;)

funny thread, but serious at the same time. rule of thumb I say is this "if you cant see your penis, you need to worry' :usa7uh:

for women I guess that picture that was posted by rob is a good one, 'if you cant see your feet, you need to worry' lol

but on a serious note, im not too sure about Europe but Americans keep getting fatter. maybe thats why they love trucks and such here. specially the midwest it seems. World's Fattest Countries - Forbes.com

america is not the fattest but its pretty bad with 74.1%!! wow..
