Reviews Alfa 4C - The last affordable driver's car?


Thanks I am one person here that likes Alfa cars and this 4C is really such a beautiful design.
 
I would say the Toyota/Subaru 86/BRZ is more affordable and more of a drivers car than the Alfa.

Good argument but you really have to drive a 4C to understand. That thing really feels totally different from any normal car. The GT86 is much more comfortable than the 4C! But I do agree, the GT86 is also a great, and more importantly, an affordable drivers car.

I often find myself making noises with my mouth mimicking the 4C's engine own noise. This the first time I do such a thing while actually driving a real car...:wtf:

OTOH, I think we shouldn't assess the quality of a car as a driver's car by its ability to drift or by how controllable the car is while drifting.

In fact, if we look at how cars are setup for drifting competition we easily understand why.

The GT86 in its stock form is, first and foremost, an affordable and terrific drifting machine, although with a tremendous potential to be a much more accomplished driver's car. And, to achieve that goal, it must give up of some of that drifting ability in favor of effectiveness and sheer speed!


BTW, the rear tires (PZero AR Racing) on the Alfa 4C are done after only ~9000 km, my personal best for an average of 15000 km with other cars and tires.

First of all, glad you enjoy the 4C. It's a fun car.

But saying that we should assess the quality of a good driver's car by its ability to drift??? That's a first for me haha.

Also, a driver's car should always present a challenge to the driver when the mood calls for the 'pedal to the metal'... I'm sure you've felt that challenge if you have pushed the 4C through some curvy roads.
 
Actually, with such lightweight and those Prius' tyres there's no need for huge power... that's more of a trait of the big, fat ass cars, such as bimmer's.:D

Man I have to correct you there. I tested the GT86 this year, and I was actually disappointed to see how much GRIP it has on the rear and how aggressively you have to work it to make the rear step out. And then, there is just not enough power to hold the slide. :/ I wish it had 300 HP.

You probably know, any BMW M (except for the SUVs of course) is easier to drift. I was sort of disappointed of the limited drift capability of the GT86. I had it sideways a few times, but only when I really threw the back out and stood full on the throttle. Not the ideal drifter, at least on good German/Austrian roads :/
 
Drifting is not only about how to start it, because there's several easy ways to do it, namely the good old handbrake... drifting also means how easily you can control it thereafter, and it's mainly here that the GT86 excels!

Man honestly I'd love to have somebody "show me" how to drift the GT86. Because as I said, I tried it many times, I was successful on a closed airport, but I wasn't able to hold it very long at all, because power was just missing. When I tried it on a mountain road, the drifts were extremely short, because the car just couldn't lose traction uphill. It's just not what I am used to. I usually test higher performance cars, in which it is so easy to have the rear step out and keep the drift going. Maybe it's just not the kind of drifter I know how to handle ;)
 
Then, it's time for you to show us one of your vids but this time drifting such a higher performance car! That would be really cool!:ylsuper:
