Alex recently went back into hospital based clinical care following a fire at his home which indirectly caused damage to equipment he reportedly needs "to live", the move back to hospital appears to be precautionary, based on the status of the equipment, and not his health. The snippets I've seen from the family have tried to put a positive outlook on things, but 2 years on he still seems to have a very, very long way to go in his recovery.

That's sad news you bring. I hope he'll fully recover in the end.

"It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Alessandro Zanardi, which occurred suddenly yesterday evening, 1 May," Zanardi's family announced.

"Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

"The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all those who are showing their support at this time and asks that their grief and privacy be respected during this period of mourning."
