Mercedes EQ Silver Arrow Concept Gives Classic Racer Modern Twist

An augmented reality display would let someone have a virtual race anytime.

Mercedes harkens back over 80 years for the look of the EQ Silver Arrow concept debuting during Monterey Car Week. The aerodynamic shape takes direct cues from the 1937 W125, capable of reaching a record-setting-for-the-time 268.9 miles per hour (432.7 kilometers per hour). Rather than its inspiration's supercharged V12, the new show car opts for a fully electric powertrain.

The company imagines the EQ Silver Arrow as having 738 horsepower (550 kilowatts) and an 80-kilowatt-hour battery pack. Mercedes knows that the whine of an electric motor doesn't yet stir the soul of auto enthusiasts like a combustion engine, so inside drivers have the choice to hear a current Formula 1 car or a Mercedes-AMG V8.

The EQ Silver Arrow has room for just a single occupant, and the person sits in the center of the vehicle. Around them, there's a smoothly styled body in carbon fiber that looks capable of slipping through the air with ease. The rear features an active spoiler that can extend when necessary. Metallic covers hide part of the 24-inch wheels, but the exposed portion shows off some of the 168 spokes on each one. The Alubeam Silver paint pays tribute to the color of the classic Silver Arrows race cars. Despite only having room for one, the concept measures an immense 17 feet 5 inches (5.3 meters) long.

Inside, the cabin mixes natural materials like leather and solid walnut with high-tech touches like a digital instrument panel. There's a second display in the center of the steering wheel. Alubeam Silver Alcantara covers each side of the cockpit as a way to evoke the exterior in a softer way.

Mercedes incorporates a little video game into the cockpit, too. When drivers want to have fun, they can activate a feature that superimposes a virtual racetrack over the actual road. There's also a car to compete against and a Virtual Race Coach to help improve a person's driving skills.

He has more post in Instagram; expecting an official release or video on this from MB. However the stories in his page are also amazing - have a look before it get expired.

Reminds me of the Mercedes T80 - a car commissioned by Hitler (and designed by Ferdinand Porsche) to break the land speed record in the 1940s right before the second world war began.

Mercedes Tribute To Silver Arrows Hints At Electric Future

Apparently there's something on this car that will be carried over to the EQ range of electric Mercedes.

Mercedes has released the first images of a brand new concept car it plans to reveal at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance, the Aesthetics Progressive Luxury.

The concept conjures images of the classic streamliner Silver Arrows racing cars of the 1930s, but it is rumored that the German carmaker plans to produce the car as a working one-off halo car to launch its EQ electric sub-brand with a bang.

The similarity with the historic racing cars isn’t an accident – the design team was inspired by the car that propelled Rudolf Caracciola 90 years ago to a world speed record on public roads, hitting 269mph on the autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt.

The concept car has been designed so that it looks like it’s falling apart at the rear end – a move that the Mercedes design team says "embodies dynamism and speed in a fascinating manner." The designers say they were particularly intrigued by the balance between the need to make a car functionally fast and the aesthetic benefit.

Clearly the future ranges of EQ electric vehicles from Mercedes aren’t going be styled to look like 90-year-old racing cars, but the German manufacturer does hint that we can expect to see some of the elements of the design here reflected in future cars.

The last electric halo car from Mercedes was a lime green SLS AMG Electric Drive, which sold in limited numbers. The rumors from Stuttgart indicate that the Progressive Luxury-inspired car could end up with an even more powerful setup than that car’s 740-hp beast.

The first standard car to come with EQ badging is expected to be the EQ C, which will be unveiled at the Paris motor show in October.

At least they corrected they typo in their own brand name... that's a start.

Apparently a tribute to the W196S SLR as well as M-Bs' 1930s' monoposto racing cars.

The title of this thread is such automotive buzzword clickbait!!

Looks like Pebble Beach is going to have more concept debuts than any auto show outside of Geneva.

This is going to be an interesting styling concept harking back to the past racing cars.

Some design cues for the next SL perhaps? Clearly future Mercedes are not going to have any lines just beautiful sculpted sheet metal instead. I like where Gordon is taking the company

What a fantastic looking concept. Hopefully the concept previews some design cues for the next generation AMG GT.

Nice Ferrari headlights.

Kidding aside, I'm surprised by the lack on side intakes for battery cooling.

Stunning concept, I wonder what will be the takeaway on future production vehicles?

^^ it’s indeed a stunner & unique even though fascia is misunderstood due to the two tone paint job at the front end. How ever the take away would the design form & language for future Merc performance cars both on AMG & EQ brands. Certain details like the three point star on grille (screen), seats, air vents, etc. can be a carry over to all Merc (may be premium models) like we hav seen MM logo on recent Ultimate Luxury concept. I have event felt the recent mesh grille (except on AMG) have no character.

So low that it apparently aggravated Gordens' sciatica (I know about that shit, believe me).

I like the fusion of the classic "hood accentuation, cabin-back" proportions with the futuristic BEV design elements.

How much of this will emerge when we can scrutinize the AMG GTs' successor in 2-3 years time ?

An interesting element which Merc should have introduced much earlier. Hope we can see non-rotating Star on wheels in future models, atleast on top end or premium models.
