Advice for new Laptop

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a new Laptop serving as a desktop replacement.
It needs to have a big screen. My current laptop has 15.6" - this is the minimal size I have in mind. The bigger the better.
I need A fairly good CPU (i7), at least 6GB of memory and a really good graphics card.
I use a lot of photoshop, run many programs in parallel and also do some video editing.

My budget is up to 1800$.

Please help me with your advice

I agree. I know three people who have HP laptops (in law school, hence the immense amount of laptops) and it has not been pretty. Terrible customer service, not good with respect to reliability.

If im not mistaken, fellow member Potential has a Envy (17?). I recall him complaining about the (typical) HP bloat ware on the notebook when he first got it. It would be interesting to see what his long term view is on the notebook.

The most common complaints that I have read from online reviews about the Envy are over heating under intense use and the very flimsy trackpad. If you are not in a hurry, I personally would recommend you wait another month for the new 2nd gen (sandy bridge) Core i7 processors as they have massive graphics capability built with in the chip. Also prices for most laptops with the 1st gen core i3/5/7 processors are going to start dropping radically.

If there is one thing I have noticed, different brands have preference in different regions. In Southern Africa, HP is dominant. Good service / value for money. In the US, alot of people's perception about HP is quite different. I hear the same about Dell, people always complaining about poor service/quality. I would recommend you see which brand holds a good service/quality reputation in your area and stick to that brand.

All I have is HPs. They give you more than Apple, but they do have a lot of problems. Funny thing is my old HP works better than the new one. It's like the quality went down.

I think my next one will be an Sony or Apple. Whatever I get I at least want a 1TB hard drive.

I've been happy with my netbook from them so far it eats up Solidworks, EoS, Borderlands, Fallout, etc. Of course looking at reviews (on the net) for specific laptops you're interested in is better.

HP is to avoid at all cost for their computers. All people I know who have HP computers are getting huge troubles with them. Mine was bugging no end and the alim burned shortly after two years... My brother's saw his motherboard dying...
Same with Acer or Asus I heard.

I like Sony, however I do not long for power so I don't know what models are interesting.

I currently, and since a few years now, run a quite old Dell "Pro" Lattitude D620, very sturdy and reliable. Only had to change the battery so far (after 4 or 5 years, no surprise).

Just got mine back (for the second time) they actually seem to have fixed the issue, but scratched the screen.
Three HP 17/18 inch laptops, issues with all three. I wish they were not the cheaper than others, I would have something else.

I used to hate sony laptops/computers. But now after owning one, I must admit, they are awesome.

Mine didn't come with too much bloatware. It came with sony's media managing software, a few other crap I uninstalled right away (good that it lets you), and Evernote. Which is fine since I use/used evernote before buying sony's laptop for on the go note keeping and it's synced to all my devices.

Plus, my comp's battery life is GREAT. With the screen at 50% and power management in "balanced" mode, since I only use it at the school on the go, the battery goes for around 4.5 - 6 hours.

But it has a good graphics card for when I plug this beast in at home and do my graphic design stuff.

Guys, how about the Toshiba X505-Q898 or the ASUS G73?? They seem to much more bang for the buck... @ around 1800-2000$ they offer real monsters...

Hp, terrible reliability, trust me i know what i am talkimg about, Sony robust and well made but they tend to be expensive as hell, Toshiba and Dell might be a good compromise, not the prettiest laptops outta there but well priced, reliable and the customer care service of toshiba isnt bad. If you have some extre bucks you might consider McBook Pro, a friend of mine has an i7 equiped one, its a beast perfomance wise, very reliable, very light but a bit overpriced as with all apple products.

I would ever only buy a Sony or Apple laptop - Apple if OS X is important and Sony anything else is important.

I wouldn't buy an Asus.
Wouldn't buy a Mac, either. You can't even smoke next to your mac without ruining the thing and voiding the warranty... Worst aftersale service in the world, no contest, and reliability has become dubious with the increased success.

Toshiba has quite a good reputation, but honestly, I'd invest a bit more and get a Sony.

Sure, Windows 7 is a bad joke next to mac OS, but everything else is reaaaaally not in the advantage of Apple.

What's wrong with ASUS ? I got one last year , and it is good for daily use. I can't complain. Any issue with ASUS that i need to pay attention? Please share with us.
