New car sales in Germany are down a painful 8% year-on-year halfway through 2013 to 1,502,630 registrations, meaning it is now the #5 market in the world, passed by Brazil. The VW Golf unsurprisingly keeps the pole position and loses slightly less ground than the market overall thanks to the arrival of the 7th generation, resulting in a market share improved to 7.9% at 118,224 sales. But the two next best-selling VWs are definitely going down: the Passat drops by 21% to 2.5% share but stays #2 while the Polo is at -20% and steps out of the podium at #4.

The Mercedes A-Class delivers by far the best progression in the Top 10: +20 spots and 73%

True, but it still trails A3 & 1er. Yet both 1er & A3 are available also as 3dr model while A-class isn't. And there is even B-class in the MB portfolio - IMO also stealing some A-class customers, while Audi & BMW still have no minivan in their respected portfolios. In the end: A-class sells extremely well, and it's definitely a sales hit, no doubt about that. With all the fact I mentioned (no 3dr model available; B-class stealing some A-class sales) we can even say A-class is relatively more successful than 1er & A3, although its absolute sales figures are lower compared to both direct rival.

i agree 100%, both a class and b class totalled over 50k in 6 months germany alone,we might even look at over 100k for both a and b over a year period germany alone...
