Apparently come March the 7-Series will finally have an it's own M Peformance model and not only the (rather useless) M-Sport Pack. A 4-Cylinder model is expected to join as well named the 728i. Further information below from Motor Authority.

BMW M Performance 7-Series To Be Named M750i?

If you want a fast, full size German sedan, there is no shortage of models available on the market. Audi has its S8, Mercedes-Benz has its AMG-tuned S-Class and BMW offers its V-12-powered 760Li, which may be fast but falls short of being nimble or even entertaining.

There’s also the BMW 7-Series-based Alpina B7, but what’s oddly absent from the BMW product line is an M-tuned version of the company’s flagship sedan. BMW has even gone so far as to trademark the M7 name, which seems to go counter to the M Division’s belief that the 7-Series is too much of a luxury car to wear a full M badge.

Enter the ever-increasing range of M-Performance BMWs, like the upcoming M235i or the not-for-U.S.-consumption M550d and X5 M50d. M Performance gives buyers a taste of the M treatment, without substantially revising the car (or crossover) from other production forms.

According to World Car Fans (viaBimmerToday), the long-awaited performance version of the BMW 7-Serieswill debut in 2013 under the M750i name. Expect the car to get a version of BMW’s 4.4-liter Twin Power Turbo V-8 engine, up-rated to an estimated 450 horsepower. Rear-drive will be standard, but all-wheel-drive is expected to be an available option.

Look for suspension development beyond the M Sport package, too, as BMW will need to justify the car’s higher price in the lineup. While nothing has been set in stone, the M750i is expected to hit the market priced above the current 750i but below the range-topping 760Li.

Weird...Why not just call it the M7?
For some odd reason, I think one can attribute it to them not wanting to usurp the 760Li in the model range. They're obviously never going to produce a V12-powered M7, so unfortunately they are intent on maintaining its position as the top model by designating the M variant as the M750i. In my opinion, it's plain silly. In the case of the rest of the BMW range, the M-variants are always at the top. For the 7, it is likely they are trying to avoid that, even though most will obviously know where the 760Li stands anyway.

It's not as if they invented the wheel or something. They just stated the obvious...

I don't feel that BMW should be worried about an M7 upstaging the 760Li since the consumer intent will be slightly different. I'd imagine the M version to have stiffer suspension and be driven as opposed to the 760Li which is more of a chauffeur driven car.

M division of BMW should produce only M3, M5 and M6 (eventually M1) and the rest should be a M performance (including X3M, X5M and X6M).

I think It's just a 750i with an extra 20bhp and M tuned suspensions, and with some special interior trimmings.

The M stands for money or marketing, no longer for motorsport. BMW should just take their thumb out of the back door, like it and call the car M7.

Oh please. Been looking at Just_Me's old avater too long, surely.

It's more like BMW have fulfilled his old signature. M is still great though. There is no denying that the 1M, M3 and M5 are a class act but the M badge has committed adultery by slapping itself on the back of SUVs and thus I see no reasons for objecting an M7 name badge.

Not to mention starting with 2012 5-Series', the price of the "M Sport" is now cheaper, and for the first time, consists of NO suspension or drivetrain upgrades.... i.e it's just a normal driving 5er with a body kit, and there must be 10 M badges sprinkled around the interior. Shameful.

At this point, they truly might as well just call whatever hyped up 7er they have an "M7", it's not like they can fool us by claiming to stick to some purity of the "M" name.

I dont know about US but in Europe both sportchassi and standard chassi is still included in the M-package, sportchassi is extra option and its for free. Either you want the standard chassi or the sportchassi when you add M-package.

In the U.S new 5ers with M Sport now don't have an "extra Sport Package" on top of the old "normal Sport Package" which used to be the case (i.e additional suspension and drivetrain tweaks on top of the regular-Sport Package to go along with all the M badges and bodywork). They've now eliminated a "Sport Package", brought the price of the M Sport Package down, and made the M Sport, the only "Regular Sport Package" that you can get.

Than thats a decision done by BMW USA.

Why not make an M760i, give it some extra 100hp to that V12, some nice suspension and gearbox upgrades, visual as well and voila!

If the 7 series containing BMW’s 4.4-liter Twin Power Turbo V-8 engine (450 horsepower version) will be called the M750i then surely the facelifted 5 series containing the same engine will be known as the M550i? Or can only one model (M550d) below the "full" M version get an M-Performance badge?

Precisely my thoughts but the geniuses in BMW probably have a better reason for not taking that route.
With that there is a clear distinction from the Alpina B7.
