Vs 5th Gear: BMW 1M vs Audi RS3

RS3, same old story... Terminal understeer and around a tricky circuit like Cadwell Park it's apparent that RS3's ageing chassis can't cope with that powerful 5 cylinder up front. Front tyres wider than the rears and you still can't get it to lift off oversteer - need to use the handbrake to induce some form of rear end mobility.

As for the 1M - it never disappoints. What a machine, and, what a cruel denial by BMW in terms of decent, fair availability.

As for Mark Higgins... That was the driving heroics' moment of the year for me. Best darn save I've seen in long while. Thanks for making that Scoob look so good! I'd have that over the RS3 too by the way.

Those walls looked rather unfriendly... ;-)

I must say that the 1M is really a very nice car, and it seems like it delivers in the driving department too.

So much was expect from the battle based on comparison tests from magazine across the world but in the end it was a comprehensive victory for the 1M. I must say that I saw my first 1M in my town which in that orange and where as I always viewed the 1 series coupe as an awkward looking design this bodykit it so aggressive that it's transformed it into a thing of beauty. On purely looks I would pick it over the RS3 or even the M3 in a heartbeat and if the new M3 matches this level of aggression it will be back on my shopping list as possibles for 2014.

Only negative that reminds with the 1M is its engine note, it's such a disappointment for such a great little car.

Quite surprised by the result, in a few comparo tests i've seen, the Audi has beaten the 1M.

Hardly surprising with tiffany at the wheel, a self proclaimed bmw fanboy.
rs3 is quicker both straight line and in the real world whether dry, damp, wet or snow, unless ofcourse you're deluded to have the driving skills of a professional racing driver (which all forum members seem to).
Why do you think they pitted a five door hatchback against a two door coupe? Do you think tiff would allow the track slaying tt-rs beat him on tv?
To get a better feel of the rs3 (other than the lame childish yanking the handbrake antics) watch this video (forward to 58sec mark and turn your speakers up).

Here you get a feel of the superior drivetrain, brutal gearbox and that glorious 2.5l 5cyl which hints to where it all started. If it weren't for quattro there would be no mark higgins mental save...can't pull that with rwd can you?

Easily the bimmer. I've driven many different A3's and they have never impressed me. Rs3 wont change much either. I rather have TT-RS than a RS3 cause A3 just looks plain and silly.

Just give it to BMW this time around - the 1M is plain and simply brilliant!Forget brand preference, the 1M is the best value for money 'petrol head' car now and a true enthusiast's dream.

Not one Audi fan? Agh come on guys.

Just playing of course.

Seriously, did you expect anything else? The RS3, as in all of the reviews and tests it has gone through so far, is more of a straight line racer, with times of 4 seonds to 100km/h. But when it comes to the track, it's way to understeer. No brainer that the 1M beat it here. I thought it would be more than those 2.9 seconds. I figure that the TT-RS would be a better competitor in this test, since it's a much better handler.
The 1er M is a nice car. It has got nicer now then the new HORRIBLY ugly 1er has seen the daylight.

In any case, I still would take the RS3 cause I think it looks so hot!

I saw my first 1M a month ago. The car is sick, those wide fenders are wide and I mean really wide. The car look like a overweight Mike Tyson :D Its the coolest small car today, no doubt!

My guess is Higgins in the Audi just might kill Tiff in the 1m in the wet.
Fun video to watch, but pretty lopsided for the BMW. Though it's interesting to note what kind of antics are necessary to overcome the RS3's understeer. Nothing short of e-brake drifts, it seems.

It would be interesting to see what the track times would be in the wet.
rs3 quicker both dry & wet, try a serious publication like: http://www.germancarforum.com/internal-combustion/37355-scans-ams-audi-rs3-vs-bmw-1m-porsche-cayman-r-pdk.html instead of night time entertainment tv.
Also it appears there are two or more threads? about this subject.
See my comments here http://www.germancarforum.com/content/114-5th-gear-pits-bmw-1m-against-audi-rs3.html where you can listen how a decent engine sounds (forward to 58sec part, hope you're on proper not laptop speakers to appreciate the sound)
