Less than three years after the start of production, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen achieves a high score: half a million E-Class sedans from the W 212 series rolled off the assembly line up to this moment. The anniversary vehicle is an E 350 4MATIC in Calcit White exterior paint finish and boasting an extensive equipment, which is bound to reach a customer from the USA. In addition to the standard safety package, the limousine also features the Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist systems on board.

"The E-Class is the epitome of a luxury sedan: modern, fascinating and safe. These facts are continuously confirmed by our clients and the high acceptance in the market. I am particularly pleased that our anniversary vehicle goes to a satisfied customer from the United States, "said Dr. Willi Reiss, head of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen.

Since the launch in May 2009, the E-Class of the W 212 series appealed to public in terms of comfort, safety and design. An impressive collection of major national and international awards confirm the high popularity of this model. For example, the E-Class was voted as favourite car in Germany and thus received the ADAC Yellow Angel Award, as well as the German Design Award for the styling philosophy it displays.

The E-Class has a long tradition in the portfolio of Mercedes-Benz. Since the first E-Class came out of the factory some sixty years ago, no less than eight different generations have been premiered during this period and more than ten million units have been sold to clients all around the world. This unique performance makes the E-Class the most successful business limousine of all time.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen is world's largest manufacturing plant of Daimler AG. In the global production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars, the Sindelfingen plant has a special role as center of excellence for luxury-class passenger cars.

an update :)

The sedan and estate of the E-Class passed significant sales milestones last month. Since market launch 2009, 500,000 sedans and 100,000 estates of the current generation have been delivered to customers.

I wonder what is the final production number for the w212 now that it is only weeks away from the w213 reveal.

I doubt it because of the sheer amount of units it sells. They need to keep enough in stock until the new E comes online. I'm sure Mercedes will announce the end of W212 production soon. They gotta stock enough cars to keep dealers happy until the new car arrives. Can't have MB stores running out of E-Classes.

If the final numbers don't pass the 1 mill to 1.5mill mark then it will be sad day for Mercedes as most E-Class models have sold 1.5 mill and more units in 7 year production cycle.

W123 - 2,696,915
W124 - 2,562,143
W210 - ? (approx. 1.5mill but cannot find exact figure)
W211- 1,500,000

The W124 will never be duplicated, things have just changed too much since then. That car was pure engineering simplicity and sheer quality and it was produced during a time where engineering was ONLY focus.

^^ Well engineering was all we had in those days. The world was pretty empty back then ;)

I don't think it's that simple. The competition has widely increased in the segment, and there is the fact that the MB line-up is much bigger now, so people who used to buy an E can now also buy a GLE, GLE coupe, CLS, E coupe, etc...

The big sedan market is still very much alive in many parts of Asia especially China.
I think the though the w212 didn't do too well relative to its competitors, it still managed to outsell it's predecessor.

1 thing for sure. The w213 will certainly outsell the w212

The W124 was simply in another league to most cars at the time for its brilliant engineering, quality and solidity and also its sheer driving pleasure. To be able to reach the standard it laid in those days compared to other cars, the W213 would have to be every bit as good as or even better than the W222 S-class to show the gulf between it and other cars in its class or below.

You do have a very good point, the market certainly has a much wider selection of different types of cars at a similar price to the E-class than previous generation models, so these will certainly eat into its final sales potential. But there are still markets where saloons are good sellers, China is one market and also middle east.

W124 - sheer quality?
No. This is wrong.
The quality was - especially in the first years - very poor. Due to that the taxi drivers in Germany organized a protest march: Hundreds of them drove to Stutttgart to complain about the poor quality. This was a big hype in Germany that days. An many articles were written on that.
I drove one too - camshaft broken. And many more defects...

of course the good old 124' could never be replicated, it just isn't feasible in these times, plus I think the engineers back then were purely passionate about their creations, unlike todays production driven attempts.

back on topic, the current E would be remembered as a controversial (design) yet solid car, which massively helped cement MB's reputation for being back on top form, among with the 204.
