You're right I believe, those vents are purely for show (on the Z3, M3, M5, 6-series they are)

But they could simply be testing air intake for a 535i with a normal engine in that car. Or they're testing new equipment.
I don't know exactly, but is not a facelift as far as I am concerned. Way too early for that, and there's nothing to be seen other than a slightly bigger front air intake.
