Lovely story. Although many cars can do the same mileage if serviced regularly, it's always great to read about cars that actually go the distance rather than being scrapped at 200,000 miles.

The E30 were very reliable, robust cars, with great build quality for the time. We had a 1986 BMW 318i Auto, my dad bought it second hand in 1989 with 60000km on the clock and after 6 years of trouble free ownership we sold it with 240,000km on the clock. The only major problem with the car was the sagging drivers seat squab, due to collapse of some springs. The engine and gearbox were so smooth, but it was a 3speed and was slightly sluggish off the line, but nevertheless it could hit an indicated top speed of 190kmh on the straights and 200km/h downhill.

Agreed. Most if not any [modern] car should be able to do half a million kilometers if it is treated well and regularly serviced.

Unfortunately I think these days a certain portion of "car enthusiasts" expect cars to go 200,000 miles without proper maintenance or care. It drives me insane when I read about people who abuse their cars and do not maintain them properly and then complain about "reliability issues".
