3 Series 40 years of the BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 series is a line of compact executive cars manufactured by the German automaker BMW since May 1975. BMW's best selling model, it is the successor to the 02 series. Since 2013, the coupé and convertible models have been marketed as the 4 Series. The M version of the 3 series, the M3, debuted with the E30 M3 in 1986.
^ Less than fortunate when you can drive a 3er? Is that a bad joke? More like people who don't want to drive a luxury barge, if anything.

And now you've joined the dark side. What happened?
LOL ! A matter of personal inconsistency, I reckon. I have a history of careening back and forth between BMW and its' arch nemesis Audi. There was one M-B in between. A 190E back in 1984. And while I remain keenly interested in and passionate about modern automobiles, I've gone into an increasing "minimalist" mode with age. I like "funky" old keepers nowadays. Like my 11 year old Audi TT. I just happened to be with Audi when that phenomenon began. It needs a companion-and I'm beginning to very casually look at well-used SWB Land Rover Defenders.

After 46 years of BMW addiction and seven various models, I have to say that my current 2001 330xi is the most responsive 4-wheeled Bimmer I've had so far. I had an R1100RS for a few years but that's in a category all its own. This E46 has the 5-speed manual with all-wheel drive and seems to just beg to take the coast road home! I've lived in this area on the Northern California Coast for nearly 50 years and US Highway 1, when it isn't clogged with that seemingly endless line of tourists, is one of the best sports car roads anywhere.

10 millionth BMW 3-Series

The 10 millionth BMW 3-Series sedan has rolled off the assembly line at the company's plant in Munich, Germany.

The landmark model was an Imperial Blue 320d LCI which features a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine that develops 190 PS (140 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. BMW didn't have much else to say about the car but the 320d sedan can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in as little as 7.2 seconds before hitting a top speed of up to 235 km/h (146 mph).

In a statement, BMW Munich Plant Director Hermann Bohrer said “The success story of the BMW 3 Series started here in Plant Munich and is now reaching a very special highpoint here as well. The fact that this landmark vehicle was produced at our plant is a particular honor for us and makes me very proud indeed of my team.”

the e46 in the first picture has one of my favourite colour on a e46!
I was also a part of this club with my former e30!

Wonderful video @rs271 of the 3-series evolution including the racing cars. Some of those cars are really so memorable. My personal favorites are the E30 and E46 models, both M3 models were and still are brilliant cars.

What an awesome legacy.

I LOVE my 340i. Sure there are things that could be better (eg. The HK sound system is rubbish and there's a bit too much road noise to name two of my gripes), but it is such a brilliant all rounder. I enjoy driving it every day. And the 40th anniversary interior upgrades make it feel very special.
