SL-Class 25 years ago: Mercedes launches the R129 SL

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.
A friend of mine bought a distressed 500SL and did a full restoration. Back to it's former glory and what a beauty it is.

I have been thinking of buying a youngtimer MB for quite a while now. I've narrowed it down to a late model R107 560SL or R129 SL600. I think I'd also do a restoration and convert the exterior to Euro spec. U.S R107s had the tragic bumperettes.

I have an up and running 1992 R129 SL600,
the softtop sometimes fail, gas consumption is horrible, driving dynamics is not as good as modern cars, but god the engine M120 is very good. If gas is cheap in your area, go for the V12.

Nice, do you have photos of the car? Also what is the maintenance cost like?

Thanks for the great questions.

I briefly cleaned the engine room, painted the tires dark and removed all stains on the soft-top last week. Will take/post some pictures.

Maintenance cost is okay for a car of this nature, but you need a very accommodating shop that understand and appreciate vintage benz. Genuine parts are hard to find/expensive/out-of-production. Nowadays we use off-label/used parts to keep it going. No big deal as this can keep yearly repair cost down to 2000~3000USD.

It's the 25th year we owned this car:
1. We replaced suspension once
2. the top seems to be weaker and takes more care/maintenance. A weird issue sometimes blow the fuse of the top.
3. The radio broke long ago. We installed another one that takes USB/iPod :), but no more CD changer for this setup.
4. Door trims can be flaky as the doors are heavy like a solid block and require a bit of bang to close.
5. From my experience with our V140 M120, all plastic parts near engine room (including reservoirs) can break down at some point due to age and extreme heat. But these should be one-off, and we have been lucky with the R129 so far.
6. Exhaust last only 5-7 years due to extreme heat.
7. Again due to heat the car will refuse to go faster than 50KM/h in the most extreme summer days. (a self-protective measure, I think I have a "standard" 400hp+ M120, not the detuned version, read wiki for more)
8. The cooling fan in front is among the loudest in any car, even when the car is idle.
9. Very limited choice of tires. The best i can find for the original 16" rims are Michelin PS3.
10. Great daily driver, good/enough ground clearance and trunk space.
11. The V12 and the gearbox easily last forever, great engine sound, great response across spectrum. No nasty vibrations felt in my V221 S350. (which is silly, V221 S350 is not a "bad" car!)
12. Attract attention in a subtle way where people look at you, but won't come take pictures sitting on the front of your car when you are away.

Will post some pictures, feel free to ask more. :)

300 SL or bust :D

Still one of my top 5 favourites, I'd even go as far to say I don't really care which engine either....who am I kidding, M120 V12 because I can LOL

I have demonstrations of a coin being sideways placed on the enigne while idling ingrained in my head. The M120 V12 is one of the smoothest engines ever. They can be had at the same price point as other R129s, but fuel efficiency as @jackywhatever stated is horrendous.

I spotted this unicorn the other day. Literally. It's the first time I've ever seen a SL73.

I remember in 1988/89 I was so excited for the launch of the R129 SL, it was the first Mercedes sports car to be launched in nearly 20 years. Based on the brilliant W124 platform and with a fantastic new 4 valves per cylinder 32 valve 240kw V8 in the 500SL. What an amazing car for its time and one of Mercedes finest SL models.

25 years already? Gee, thanks @Rolf for posting this and making me feel old. That reminds me that I need to get Botox for my face . ;)

Imagine my feeling seeing this thread in 2025 instead of 2015!

Anyways...will I ever forget my drive in the R129 SL600 V12? HELL TO THE NO! Smoothness beyond comprehension.

R129 SL600!!!!

M

One of the most glorious cars to be ever drive the face of this planet.
How's the quest going @sako97
