GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) 2026 AMG GT 4-Door Vision EV

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) is the first generation five-door variant of the AMG GT two-door sports car. Production: September 2018– Model years: 2019–
Thanks to downsizing you must buy a 400hp car if you want a straight 6 or a 500hp car if you want a V8, even if 300hp are more than enough.

This is a problem of todays cars.
It's just a consequence of improved technology.
Nobody is going to make a 300hp V8, when an turbo charged inline 4 will do that pretty reliably, with about twice the fuel economy.

I think this is really the truth of it for you. You want a certain cylinder count - that is your primary concern, other aspects, such as excitement or fully exploitable power levels are secondary. That's not really a product problem, that's more to do with your preference.

I think there’s a little bit misunderstanding.

Let me clarify.

Excitement comes usually with the character of the engine, few inline 4 turbos have character tbh. 3,5,6,8 cylinder engines however are usually full of character.

Fully exploitable power means that the car is not too powerful, I want a characterful engine I can fully exploit.

I'm an advocate of this mindset, however, nobody is complaining about the output of any combustion engine models around here being too high - had the AMG come with a Jesko rivaling V8 I'm sure there wouldn't be anybody suggesting that less would be more.
Correct. However Ferrari have done something cool with the 12C.

They have limited and moderated torque throughout the rev range.

This makes the car less prone to killing you but also makes the power mor usable.

When something in life be comes to easy, it often becomes less gratifying.

EVs are like playing a video game and unlocking a car that rate at 10/10 for handling, acceleration and top speed.

There is no rev range, turbo lag, weight transfer or red characteristics to manage.

I don't think artificial V8 noise can fix this. The noise might be fun for a few week but then get annoying because you know its fake.

Maybe AMG should make a RWD version. I have read that the Macan EV is more engaging and steers nicer as a RWD than AWD.

I don't believe AMG aimed to create the feeling of a performance ICE vehicle with turbo lag, weight transfer to manage, etc. An ICE vehicle has it own set of flaws that have fun factors to them.
A performance EV is a slightly different type of instrument with its own set of flaws. The aim on this one is to get the driver more engaged with it as an EV. Time will tell if the engineers were successful. I think you are drawing too many conclusions on what has not officially been tested yet.

Looks like the shift articulation has been achieved. It seems to be kicking with each gear.

Pretty cool up and downshifts. External speaker sound isn’t very V8 though.

Personally, I also like it, for a number of reasons. The styling is indeed controversial, but I think in a good way, this car doesn't look like anything else on the road and also brings in some new styling elements for future Mercedes models. From the rear it has super car vibes. Using a V8 soundtrack is a brilliant move by AMG, as it bridges the gap between ICE and EVs. You have the best of both worlds, one day you can blast down a mountain pass listening to the rasping and burbles of the V8 with the same feeling of changing gears like a regular ICE V8 AMG model and then the next day you can cruise in silence on the autobahn without the V8 mode on. The interior is also a change from Mercedes as the cockpit is more driver focused with the 2 curved screens facing the driver and the passenger screen is totally isolated. With lovely switches on the center console, carbon trim, diamond stitched door cards and fantastic metallic looking speaker covers. The interior is also spacious for 4 passengers, a 6ft 3in person will be more than comfortable in the back seat sitting behind a similar sized driver.

I am looking forward to more videos showing the car driving bonkers around a track. The N ring time will probably be close to setting records for an EV saloon, lets wait and see.
