GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) 2026 AMG GT 4-Door Vision EV

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) is the first generation five-door variant of the AMG GT two-door sports car. Production: September 2018– Model years: 2019–
People hate on the XM all the time, I personally think it looks pretty good, but I don't doubt a lot of people hold on to the dislike of the looks because they don't like what it is, and that'll be the same for the AMG because it's an EV.

Nah, they don't like what it is because of the looks. The XM is a mighty fine car for the rest.
Why would anyone not like what the XM is? It's a mighty V8 hybrid SUV. Perfect for this day and age. The looks are its main problems and I wholeheartedly agree

For the AMG, yeah, that car is extremely ugly and has an EV drivetrain and is a crossover in a segment that's not at all desirable with that cramped interior and low seating.

A personal, subjective perception:

There is an almost seven year old vehicle by a competing German manufacturer positioned in the appoximate relative segment that features an exterior+interior design that is far more cohesive.

Why would anyone not like what the XM is?

Did you miss the tirade of complaints the BMW and M's flagship car was an SUV and not a dedicated sports car? That it was not a ground up M car as claimed but an X7 underneath? That it was pointless since it was much more expensive than the faster X5M? That it's 2.5 tonnes?

The looks are its main problems and I wholeheartedly agree

It's currently BMW's best looking SUV, in my humble opinion. And It stands out with it's own identity from the rest of the range, whilst carrying some of the GKL styling cues, which I think is important. To drag this topic back to the Mercedes, it's unfortunate that the AMG bears a resemblance to the CLA, or a Smart#6 that's spent 20 years in a supermax prison.

The XM is a desirable car if you get past the looks (which most don't). The AMG has a lot more going against it, and that makes them incomparable.

The XM's got the luxury, the quality, the V8, the space, and 2.5 tonnes is completely normal these days (the AMG weighs the same, and that's a sport sedan). What it lacks are the looks, and that's why it's doing like it does.

Yeah but your humble opinion doesn't matter. The vast majority thinks otherwise. And my point is that that is the problem with this car. Not the supposed M only roots, the price, the weight or its value vs an X5 M (which is 100k more expensive where I live).

The AMG has, beyond looking even worse than the XM, tech nobody in this price range wants.

I wasn’t so sure about the XM’s styling until I saw it in real life. It looks bonkers. People were stopping by just to look at it.

Fiat Multipla is also turning heads, so does the Cybertruck or Aztek.

Even though the XM is already a forgotten thing and thanks poor sales a rare sight.
A nightmare from every angle IMO.

Its impossible to say for sure if its JUST the looks that sunk the XM. I think its a huge ugly warthog of a thing, but some might like its brash looks. So for me, its very likely a combination of factors.
And one of those factors is probably that the X5M is 95% of the car, but for a lot less money, and a lot less ugly.

Why get a Hybrid V8 behemoth (the XM weighs between 2.7 and 2.8 tonnes by the way), when you can get a pure V8 SUV which is dynamically superior in the X5M?
The M enthusiasts not liking that the first dedicated M-only car was an SUV probably didn't help the conversation around the car either.
And then there's the price.

The GT 4 door EV here has desirable technology, but is an ugly duckling. But the biggest problem with it, is the combination of the above two issues and the price.
If they priced this at $120k, it would sell, because its expensive, but not foolish. At $250k+ it'll sell as well as the Lucid Air Sapphire. That is to say it won't sell.

On the XM, part of the resentment is the looks for sure, the rest imo is the fact that BMW is calling it their M flagship. An obese SUV, instead of a coupe or sports car. At least that’s what a crying and hand wringing was about here. I too like the XM, now.
