Audi and Porsche are sharing development of a new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, and one of the first Audi models to use the new underpinnings will be the Q5 E-tron SUV.

Set to be unveiled in 2022 ahead of a market launch the following year, the new model will sit between the imminent Q4 E-tron, which uses the VW Group's MEB platform, and the full-sized E-tron flagship, which is based off a modified version of the MLB SUV architecture.

Would've figured by the general shape and proportions that it would instead be on the MEB as the VW ID6, very similar shape. Guess not

Actually, the MEB and PPE BEV toolkits are not that unsimilar. The PPE accomodates multi-chamber air suspensions, an 800V system and is allegedly capable of supporting tri-as well as-quad e-motor configurations. Both MEB and PPE are highly scalable systems. Rumours have it that by 2030, VAG will "merge" all electric platforms (MEB, PPE, J1) into a single corporate SSP (Scalable System Platform=almost limitless scalability)) toolkit that will underpin all automobiles from Polo-sized vehicles to top-end luxury sedan/sport/GT cars and SUV/SACs'. It is quite possible that VAG will not only want to maximize economies of scale within the group, but also offer the platform to recipients from outside of the group.

Mods, could you please fix the mistake I made in the Title (extra on). So the official VW group presentation calls it Q5 e-tron but then Audi said it would be called Q6 in annual conference. I'm a little confused.

More spyshots:

The chargeport is no longer at the same spot as on the current e-tron.

Where does this fit in the lineup then?

What about the E-Tron SUV at the moment?

Does this replace that?

Audis nomenclature is getting really complicated

SUVs are going to be dominant, but I reckon there will be cars if the Sphere and A6 concepts are anything to go by.

It indeed appears that Audi may significantly cull their selection of "traditional passenger cars". The Grand Sphere Concept is a prelude for a large, luxury, low ride height production automobile. A production A6 eTron +Avant have been greenlighted and an A4 eTron + Avant is reportedly also in the works. The eTron GT will be with us for several years as well. However, it remains unclear whether Audi will present a "premium" response to the VW ID 3/Cupra Born. The Sky Sphere Concept sportscar will apparently not be a direct preview of a production car per se, but simply a canvas upon which Audi will test the reaction to future possible design elements. Perhaps that could change however.

Although the semiconductor shortage may have thrown a monkey-wrench into the works, 2022 is planned to be quite a busy presentation year for Audi. The production Q6 eTron in standard as well as Sportback form, the A6 eTron production model towards the end of the year (perhaps both Sportback and Avant simultaneously), the possibility of an A4 eTron concept as well as a Q7-sized BEV luxury SUV concept...

As more camo is stripped from these Q5/Q6 E Tron prototypes, the worse it starts to look for me. Disappointed that it is in getting split headlights, and the overall design and proportions of the car feels a little stubby and bloated to me. As opposed to the regular E-Tron which in my opinion looks beautiful and relatively sleek for what it is. BUT, I don't think it'll look as terrible as China's Q5 E-Tron.

It is certainly "predictable" in that particular Audi sort of way. Perhaps forgiving when it comes to elevated ride height vehicles. But I certainly hope that Audi applies a somewhat more daring design approach to its' upcoming low ride height PPE (SSP)-underpinned automobiles (A6 eTron, electric A8 successor...etc...). While the precision of Audi designs prevent their products from dating rapidly, they do become increasingly unexciting and eventually...boring. The eTron GT displays an adventurous exterior design spirit, but is, in some aspects, a bit "overboard". A bit less could have been alot more. There's a bit too much going on.

Lmao, hope those roof lights are at least an option.

Still waiting for Audi to do away with these ugly, poor ranged and obese SUVs AND finally start testing that sweet A6 e-tron Avant.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
