Kia are launching the 5th Gen of its very popular SUV, the new Sportage.
And the design is certainly eye catching. I like the interior very much, it looks like something from a BMW/Mercedes.
This is generation 5
Kia launches the new generation Sportage. The SUV is getting a new design inside and out as well as new assistance and comfort systems.
The SUV, known internally as "QL", has been on the market since 2015 and will expire in mid-2021. The fifth generation of the Sportage is based on the same platform as the new group brother Hyundai Tucson. There will be a version specially tailored to Europe, which Kia will present in September 2021. As the basis for this, Kia has now presented the fifth generation of the compact SUV in Korea. And for the first time it is available in two lengths, depending on the market.
No more round: New, sharper optics
Visually, Kia redesigned the Sportage significantly. The design is based on the new Optima, Sorento and EV6 and is not quite as rounded. Accordingly, the tiger nose and a slightly retracted grill can be seen on the front. The matrix LED headlights, which are bordered by boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, are high in the front and the bonnet is contoured. The wheelbase of the new Sportage is 2,755 mm, 1,865 mm wide, 4,660 mm long and 1,660 mm high. The luggage volume is 637 liters. The rear seats can be folded down with a simple push of a button, so that a level cargo space can be created seamlessly and quickly.
On the side, the rising window line leads the view to the powerful C-pillar. In contrast to the Sorento, the ribbon of windows does not taper towards the rear. A curved body corrugation extends under the window line, which gives the wheel arches even more strength at the rear. The classic exterior mirrors are enthroned on the door rail. The roof runs almost horizontally and forms a roof spoiler towards the rear. The rear window is steep. Strong beading characterize the rear with upright lights. For the first time, the Sportage can also be ordered with a black roof. Depending on the equipment variant, the Sportage has 17, 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels.
View into the cockpit
The Sportage has also learned a lot from the brothers for the interior. The sports steering wheel comes with a small baffle and three spokes. A 12-inch cockpit display and another 12-inch touchscreen under a shared pane on the dashboard inform, entertain and navigate the passengers. In addition to a new infotainment system, the Sportage Gen. 5 also has other connectivity features. Several smartphones can be integrated and maneuvering works by remote control. Info services via Kia app are now just as much a reality as Kia navigation with historical and real-time traffic data and pedestrian navigation via smartphone for the last mile. Over-the-air updates of the software are also possible. A lane keeping service joins the assistance systems, an adaptive cruise control and a blind spot warning. The shift-by-wire gear selector lever sits on the center console.
For the chassis, Kia relies on electronically controlled dampers. A terrain mode conditions the electronically controlled all-wheel drive of the Sportage in more difficult conditions such as snow, mud and sand. In Korea, the new Sportage is offered with a 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine with 180 hp and 270 nm torque. There is also a two-liter turbo diesel with 186 hp and 425 Nm of torque. The petrol engine comes as a six-speed manual switch or a seven-speed double clutch. The diesel is always linked to an eight-speed automatic. However, depending on the market, Kia is also announcing the use of hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drives. Information on this will follow later.
