It's certainly helps level the playing field for those with more of it than they have talent. But as recently discussed, two of the sports biggest champions didn't come into the sport with money.
It's not even true for teams. Alonso's Renault championships didn't come with a team that had the biggest budget, far from it... and one of the biggest spenders (Toyota) hardly achieved anything.
If you or your team is fundamentally not very good, you won't win. Sure, Lance has a job in F1, but I suspect he'll finish his career one day with very little to show for it. Schuey and Hamilton come from far more humble beginnings and have 13 F1 WDC championships between them. Ol' 7-time Jimmie Johnson over in NASCAR grew up in a trailer park.
Money is the dark side of the motor sport, but it's not absolute.
