I don’t think the Golf will ever be as revolutionary as the mark v, but each new generation has looked better than the last. Like all benchmarks this will be met with some criticism at first, but will be loved eventually.

So as well as the usual signalling you can now Virtue signal in your Golf?
The memes will just write themselves. :D

This Golf 8 reminds me of the Golf 6, which was a major facelift of the Golf before it, but with same platform.

Don’t forget that the VW I.D electric hatchback launch next year. That will be the revolutionary version of the Golf.

Production of the Volkswagen Golf 8 will officially commence in June 2019, and a fresh report out of Germany suggests that the upcoming version of the brand’s C-segment hatchback will boast a dual-screen cockpit to rival that of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

The folks over at Auto Bild, who have made a habit of correctly predicting what’s going on behind closed doors in Wolfsburg (perhaps with a little inside knowledge), report that the eighth-generation Golf will employ a pair of large screens and very few physical buttons.

Interestingly, as can be seen in the German publication’s video below, the vast majority of traditional physical controls look set to be scrapped in favour of a touchscreen arrangement sited alongside a new version of VW’s active info display.

While the widescreen cockpit in the new A-Class appears as one large unit and sits proud of the facia, Auto Bild’s prediction for the Golf sees the digital instrument cluster topped by a traditional cowling and the separate central screen positioned at a slightly different angle. In short, the rendering in the video below draws inspiration from the facia of the new Touareg.

The video also suggests that the Volkswagen Golf 8 will feature touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel, again borrowing an idea from the new A-Class (which itself inherited the technology from the E- and S-Class models). A comprehensive voice-control system and a new head-up display are also expected to be included.

Watch Auto Bild’s video below to have a closer look at the sort of cabin the Golf 8 is expected to feature…

That's similar to the setup in the Touareg.

Whenever I see the Touareg central screen I cant help laughing, it is Ginormous, a bit like the 84inch TV screens you get nowadays, they designed for people with vision problems Lol!

Wonder what the base 1.4 TFSi will look like inside? Will the screen be halved and the rest be a storage shelf?

The base infotainment will likely mirror the solution seen in the Toureg. A screen with shortcut buttons and physical HVAC controls. Some customers will find the base screen large enough or prefer some physical controls.

I wouldn't be surprised if the digital cockpit will be standard. From what I gauged the Golf will assume a slightly more premium position now that Skoda will launch a genuine Golf alternative called Scala. Furthermore the Polo is now so roomy and competent that a golf is not necessary unless you frequently maximise the full boot space.

Other cars that are attacking the Golf include the T-Cross, T-Roc and the up and coming I.D. Therefore I expect the Golf to have a premium and distinct positioning.

The new Skoda Scala. The Concept @ Paris was striking and by the looks of it it has been carried over to production quite well.
Do you think it might cannibalise Golf sales?

Do you think it might cannibalise Golf sales?

Both yes and no. Compared with other practical hatchbacks the Golf is actually posh. Its buyers either want the VW or don't mind paying a bit extra for sophistication. Some of those customers would not consider a "lesser" brand and are more likely to trade up than down.

For everyone else, the Scala could be that missing cheaper Golf that also prioritise comfort. Unfortunately the Leon hasn't been able to fill that role because of stiff suspension on some models.

The success of the Scala will hinge on how its marketed and to whom. Currently the name has zero equity as it's a new name and its predecessor the Rapid had terrible ride quality compared with other Skodas. Color, Monaco and Sportline trims will be crucial in attracting style conscious buyers.

I'm a huge fan of VW's decision to moving the grille to the bumper. It's very innovative.
