Likely coming out for 2017 model year

Lincoln has started the testing procedures for the production-spec Continental as a fully camouflaged prototype has been caught on camera for the very first time.

Spotted testing in United States, the heavily disguised Continental is a first sign of the upcoming production version of the much criticized namesake concept which was unveiled earlier this month at New York Auto Show. It will be interesting to see how the premium sedan will make the transition from a conceptual form to a series production vehicle, especially taking into consideration Bentley has accused Lincoln from borrowing many styling cues from the Flying Spur.

Very few details are available at this point about the car, but Lincoln has confirmed the model will be powered by a V6 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine which will be exclusive to the Continental. The range-topping Lincoln is expected to ride on an enlarged version of the Ford Fusion's CD4 platform but with an all-wheel drive layout as standard. A base model with a four-cylinder engine will likely be offered in China while a nine-speed automatic transmission will likely be available.

Taking into account the prototype appears to wear the production body, chances are the Continental is not that far away and will likely hit dealerships next year as a 2017MY, with prices kicking off at more than $60,000.

It's actually AWD, but this is a stretched Fusion platform so I seriously doubt any of the established competition has anything to worry about.

The greenhouse reminds me a bit of the Mercedes E (W212), especially the door/window frame finish and angles as well as the thick C-pillar

Did not think the Bentley-esque style would make production.
Unexpected from Ford to imitate another manufacturers design.

Bentley designers slam 'copycat' Lincoln Continental concept
by Jens Meiners 31 Mar 2015
Lincoln Continental concept, a full-size sedan which launches at the New York auto show. He wasted no time pointing out the similarities. "I would have called it Flying Spur concept and kept the four round lights," he sarcastically noted on his Facebook page. The statement set off a flurry of supportive comments – such as this one by another professional designer: "I thought this was only done in China? Finally a 'Bentley for the masses' though..."

On the Facebook page of Lincoln chief designer David Woodhouse, Donckerwolke asked rhetorically: "Do you want us to send the product tooling?" The comment was deleted swiftly.

Speaking with Car Design News, Donckerwolke elaborates: "This behavior is not respectable. Building a copy like this is giving a bad name to the car design world." And his exterior design chief, Sangyup Lee, describing the Lincoln as "a joke," adding: "It is very disappointing, especially for an exclusive brand like Lincoln."

Fair comments or sour grapes? It's difficult to say before seeing the car at the show later this week, but one thing's for sure – the tension between the designers will be high in New York this week.

2017 Lincoln Continental Spied! It Really Is Happening
Lincoln luxury marches toward production with few changes.

What It Is: Lincoln’s new Continental sedan, captured here wearing an exclusive new, trippy-ball body wrap while testing near Ford’s global headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. Despite having only just debuted in concept-car form at the 2015 New York auto show, the Continental project has allegedly been well underway for some time, an assertion backed up by the largely complete-looking car you see here.

Why It Matters: Lincoln publicly stated that the Continental would be built and that the production version would look more or less exactly like the concept car. To that end, we can see several design cues through this prototype’s camouflage that indicate the brand hasn’t changed much. The LED head- and taillights, not to mention the sedan’s general proportions, are all dead ringers for those of the New York show car, which, depending on who you talk to, is either a really good thing or an indication that Lincoln still isn’t taking the daring risks some think it should and possibly even copying others. What we do know is that the Continental is poised to better tug at the aspirational hearts of luxury buyers than the sad-sack MKS, or even the last proto-Ford to wear the “Continental” name, for that matter.
Platform: Luxury snobs will pooh-pooh the Continental’s front-drive-based architecture, but there’s no denying that the sedan’s long wheelbase, short overhangs, and powerful greenhouse proportions at least trick the casual viewer into thinking the rear wheels are the only ones doing the driving. Even so, all-wheel drive will be standard. The setup will be bolted to a platform that we’re told is an enlarged version of the Ford Fusion/Lincoln MKZ’s global CD4 architecture. The rather extreme size differential between those smaller sedans and the Continental will place a great deal of the engineers’ focus on chassis stiffness; one potential drawback could be excess weight from additional bracing. Another potential pitfall is that Lincoln could—in a misguided attempt at cost savings—ditch much of what made the show car’s interior such a figurative and literal dazzler.
Powertrain: Here, too, the Ford thread comprises much of the Continental’s stitching, with a 3.0-liter version of the F-150’s twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 likely the only choice for American consumers. Lincoln could sell the 2.7-liter as the base engine, however, and add something above, while at the same time giving global markets such as China a turbocharged four-cylinder at the bottom end. While Lincoln could launch the Continental with one of its current six-speed automatic transmissions, we figure that by the time the luxury sedan goes on sale, Ford’s new nine- and ten-speed automatics (co-developed with General Motors) will have come online and be available for use. Finally, the all-wheel-drive Continental is rumored to be in line for a variant of the new Ford Focus RS’s sweet torque-vectoring setup—but likely tuned to be less “gymkhana” and more “all-weather secure.”

Competition:
Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Cadillac CT6, Hyundai Equus, Kia K900.

Estimated Arrival and Price: Given how the Continental’s body structure, lighting elements, and other key features seem “finished”—even on this covered-up prototype—the car can’t be too far away from going on sale. In fact, we know it’s not too far away from going on sale, because Lincoln said in New York that the Continental was coming “next year.” Figure on a splashy debut at the lavish Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance later this summer before sales begin sometime in 2016. Pricing is likely to go where no modern, non-SUV Lincoln has dared tread: the $60,000-and-up range.

The irony is that the Bentley will probably move more units than the Lincoln

Our spy photographers have nabbed the first interior pictures of Lincoln's upcoming Continental sedan. Likely due out some time next year, the Lincoln Continental will be branded as a 2017 model year vehicle

The interior of the Continental concept that debuted at the 2015 New York auto show was draped in chrome, and it looks as though plenty of the shiny stuff will make the transition to production. Chrome accents can be seen around the car's large LCD screen and HVAC controls located just below. However, some of the concept's chrome-faced buttons have been replaced with conventional black plastic units.

This prototype's gauge cluster is devoid of any bling, but we expect that to change for the transition to production. Ditto for the air vents.

Lincoln's push-button transmission will appear in the Continental, this time alongside the center LCD screen. That's the same configuration that was shown on the show car.

The rest of the Continental's interior is still hidden by thick camouflage, but we expected to be able to get a better peek in the coming months, so stay tuned

Today we bring what could possibly be the last batch of spy images with the 2017 Lincoln Continental.

With a confirmed debut next month in Detroit, it’s no wonder this near-production prototype only has a thin layer of camouflage. It looks just about the same as the concept shown earlier this year in New York and has what it takes to spice things up in the full-size luxury segment in United States. That front grille you are seeing is a sign of things to come as Lincoln through the voice of its marketing manager Imran Jalal has announced it will likely be implemented on other models.

Details about the 2017 Continental are scarce at the moment, but we do know from Ford’s premium marque that it will ride on a front-wheel drive platform. That sounds a bit disappointing, but at least the model is going to be available with an optional all-wheel drive arrangement.

Don’t hold your breath for a diesel engine as it won’t happen, while a more frugal hybrid derivative is not on the agenda for the foreseeable future. One of the engines that we know for sure will be on offer is a 3.0-liter EcoBoost exclusively engineered for the model.

Expect full details and images to emerge at the beginning of January, prior to the model’s debut in Detroit on January 11 during the first press preview day. It remains to be seen whether Bentley will have something to say about the production-ready model taking into account the guys from Crewe said the concept looked like a Continental.

Meet the 2017 Lincoln Continental before Detroit

The 2017 Lincoln Continental is making an early debut prior to its premiere set for next week at the North American International Auto Show.

Despite the poor photo quality, it’s easy to notice Lincoln’s production-ready Continental will remain faithful to the concept exhibited at last year’s New York Auto Show. We are inclined to believe this might not be the range-topping trim since it doesn’t seem to have LED headlights and there’s not much chrome trim either. The attached image is likely grabbed from Lincoln’s website and shows a base version without all the bells and whistles.

Technical details remain a mystery at this point, but from what we’ve heard it will be offered with a biturbo 3.0-liter V6 engine taken from the 2017 MKZ. It will probably generate the same 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque as it does in the all-paw MKZ. Keep in mind this is a Lincoln-exclusive engine and is also offered in a lesser state of tune in the front-wheel drive MKZ with 350 hp and 400 lb-ft.

NAIAS will kick off on January 11 with the first press preview day, so the wait is almost over. We will keep you posted if anything pops up until then.

Doesn't look like a Bentley at all imo, exept for maybe the FWD proportions. Why would Ford ruin the car like that? DOA.
