Introduction
Determined to knock BMW from its small sport luxury throne -- or at least destabilize it -- Cadillac is aiming at that most sacred of sports machines, the BMW M3. The regular ATS sedan may not yet be slowing 3 Series sales, but it has given an American automaker a legitimate place among desirable small sport sedans. The 2015 Cadillac ATS-V now wants to impress serious enthusiasts who need a practical four-door that doubles as a daily adrenaline shot.
To impress, the ATS-V will likely use the same 420-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V6 found in the top trim level of the next-generation CTS. That shouldn't be a significant design hassle, as the new CTS is built off the current ATS platform.
Regardless, the 2015 Cadillac ATS-V looks equipped for the job. Photos of a prototype ATS-V appear to show increased rear fender flaring to accommodate the wider tires and larger brakes that the ATS-V will require. Larger grille and airdam openings look suitably voluminous to pass the airflow a twin-turbo V6 will need. The quad exhaust pipes, while not an M3 invention, show that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The ATS-V will need to do more than simply ape the M3, however. An adaptive suspension, perhaps based on the new generation of Magnetic Ride Control available on the Corvette Stingray, could help the ATS-V handle trips around town while remaining ready for track-day weekends. The cabin, already pretty nice in the regular ATS, will need to offer additional refinement through options and aesthetic choices. And it will need to wrangle the CUE infotainment system into something useful, instead of the error-prone mess of touchscreen menus offered in the current car.
Fuel economy won't be a foremost concern to buyers in this segment, but considering that a detuned version of this engine in the new XTS full-size sedan delivers 24 mpg highway, the ATS-V shouldn't extract a significant fuel penalty.
We'll likely see the 2015 Cadillac ATS-V bow early next year, with sales beginning next fall. Check back for more on the ATS-V, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice as it becomes available.

Based on a already perfect chassis and a car that is sportier than the F30 even in its base form and using that splendid 420HP V6 which btw is a brilliant engine... this car simply CANNOT fail! I love it already :)

Cannot wait to see this. I saw a separate thread and thought it was official for a min. Yes this is going to be a handling wonder if nothing else, but 450hp please!

Cadillac will unveil a high-performance "V" version of its ATS rear-drive compact sedan at November's 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The smaller V will be a sibling, at least in spirit, of Caddy's hot CTS-V line that is the brand's racing model.
The ATS is Cadillac's entry in the competitive small premium sport sedan segment pioneered by and still dominated by BMW's 3-Series. The ATS-V, which would go on sale next year, would be a direct rival for the high-performance "M3" version of that BMW.
Cadillac confirmed the November debut for the ATS-V, but has not provided details of the coming performance model, nor has it said what will power it.
The power plant is widely expected to be a new-design, twin-turbo, 3.6-liter V-6 that was introduced in the V-Sport model of Cadillac's redesigned 2014 CTS midsize sedan. In that CTS model, the V-6 puts out 420 horsepower and 430 pounds-feet of torque and gives the sedan a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, according to Cadillac.
Dropping it into the smaller, lighter ATS should create a sedan hot enough to be a credible rival to the BMW M3, which is powered by a 425 hp, 3-liter, twin-turbo inline 6.
The current CTS-V line — offered as a sedan, coupe and sport wagon — still is based on Cadillac's last-generation CTS and is powered by supercharged 556 hp., 6.2-liter V-8. It boasts a 0-to-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds, according to Cadillac.
The brand is expected to unveil the first model of a new CTS-V line, based on the new-generation CTS, in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new CTS-V is expected to get a version of the 650 hp., 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 that powers the new "big nasty" Corvette Z06 reported on here last week.
Cadillac needs to build some new buzz around both the ATS and CTS. The ATS, the brand's new entry, made its debut as a 2013 model and got off to a fast start, but sales so far this year are down 20.8% from the period a year ago, according to Autodata. The CTS — all-new and a true midsize for 2014 — has sales through July this year up just 0.1% from the period a year ago.

One thing I know is that I do love the ATS :)
The M3/4 is an easy choice in this class but I do think this Caddy has more than just a chance to become a pretty appealing alternative.
